In a challenging matchup on Thursday, September 12, the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans Boys’ soccer team faced off against the Doral Academy Red Rock Dragons. The Dragons dominated the game with relentless pressure, ultimately defeating the Trojans 8-0. Despite the loss, the Trojans’ goalkeeper Cayden Cowley demonstrated resilience, saving 11 of the 19 shots aimed at the goal.
Assistant Coach Neil Cowley reflected on the team’s performance with optimism, emphasizing growth in understanding and execution, even in the face of defeat.
“What we did good, even though the team was beat, we did not get discouraged. There were moments of frustration, but overall the team was humbled and understood. They were just getting outplayed by an outstanding team,” Coach Cowley said. “Our players better understand the purpose of spacing out—moving to open space, not bunching up. Solid passing and trapping the ball are areas we need to fix. Our team absolutely knows how to be successful, but it’s the small things within the whole game that make the difference.”
The game against Doral Academy showcased the Dragons’ high-level intensity. Coach Cowley noted that the Dragons’ strategy, which involved constant pressure on the Trojans’ midfield and defenders, disrupted Pahrump’s game plan.
“Red Rock caused mass chaos to our midfield and defenders by pressuring their whole team towards the ball while still maintaining dispersion. It was like a clinic to watch,” Cowley added.
Despite the loss, the Trojans are committed to learning from the game and focusing on areas for improvement as they prepare for their upcoming match at Sloan. Cowley praised the team’s effort and highlighted their determination to get better with each challenge they face.
Although the Trojans have some work to do, their coaches remain confident that success is within their reach as they continue to grow and refine their skills throughout the season.
