The PVHS Cross Country team took part in the Palo Verde Labor Day Invitational on Saturday, August 31, demonstrating determination and resilience in the face of challenging conditions and stiff competition.

The Freshman/Sophomore girls’ team put forth a solid effort, with three runners representing PVHS. Alexis Clouser led the team with a strong performance, finishing in 14th place and earning a medal. Keelee Gieni and Kimberly Trejo also competed well, finishing in 30th and 45th places, respectively. For two of the freshmen, this was their first 5k race, and they tackled a course that was more demanding than those they had run earlier this season. Despite the tougher conditions, the girls posted commendable times.

The Freshman/Sophomore boys’ team had a standout performance, with three athletes earning medals. Joaquin Flores, Daniel Thompson, and Josh Flores finished 18th, 23rd, and 24th, respectively. Their strong positioning throughout the race enabled them to secure these places and bring home medals. The holiday weekend limited the number of athletes able to participate, but those who did race showed significant determination and competitive spirit

In the Junior/Senior division, the boys narrowly missed out on earning medals. Competing against several larger schools, the split among the runners made it difficult for some to find their rhythm, especially since they have been accustomed to running together. The girls’ team also faced challenges, particularly with injuries to a few key members. The weather conditions added to the difficulty, as rain made the course muggy and high temperatures by the time the older athletes ran led to slower times.

Head Coach Erik Odegard reflected on the team’s performance, noting the difficulties they faced but also expressing optimism for the future. “As the season goes on, we’ll start to find our mix and know who we need to attach to. Because we are so young, the kids are starting to understand what it is going to take to improve, like pushing harder in practice instead of just completing the run,” Odegard explained. He added that the team will continue to increase mileage early in the season to build endurance and refine their race strategies.

Despite the challenges, the PVHS Cross Country team showed great potential at the Palo Verde Labor Day Invitational, setting the stage for continued improvement and success in the upcoming meets. The team will race this Saturday, September 7, at Sunset Park in the Larry-Burgess – Las Vegas Invitational.
