The Pahrump Valley High School Lady Trojans’ quest for a state championship came to a close on Friday, May 9, in a hard-fought 5-4 loss to the Virgin Valley Bulldogs. The regional playoff matchup, held at Durango High School, was a tense back-and-forth contest, with both teams showcasing grit and determination until the final out. Evalenne Armendariz pitched for the Trojans, anchoring a defense that battled to keep the Bulldogs in check while the offense clawed for every run.

After a quiet first inning from both sides, the Trojans opened the scoring in the top of the second. Danika Cox-Hosino led off but was grounded out at first. Madison Rodriguez attempted to lay down a bunt but was thrown out by the third baseman. With two outs, Mariah Gray sparked the offense with a double to left field. Ryleigh Denton followed with an RBI single to the same side, bringing Gray home. Denton’s steal to third gave the Trojans another scoring opportunity, but a strikeout ended the inning with a slim 1-0 lead.
Virgin Valley answered quickly, knotting the score in the bottom of the second with a combination of timely hitting and aggressive base running. A base hit and multiple stolen bases led to a run before the Trojans regrouped defensively with a fly out to third and two strikeouts to close the frame.

The third inning proved pivotal. The Trojans were retired in order, and the Bulldogs capitalized during their at-bat. A ground out to Evalenne Armendariz started the inning, but the following batter singled to get on base. A triple drove in a run, and a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases. Back-to-back hits scored three more runs for Virgin Valley before the Trojans halted the momentum with another ground out and a strikeout. By the end of the inning, the Bulldogs had seized a 5-1 advantage.
Both teams remained scoreless in the fourth, but the Trojans mounted a determined response in the top of the fifth. Mariah Gray again got things rolling with a single to left, though she was caught trying to stretch it into a double. Denton added another single, but was taken out at second on a fielder’s choice by Sadie Freeman. Autumn Colon then kept the inning alive with a single, followed by Sunday Colon’s RBI hit to score Freeman. Armendariz was issued an intentional walk, and Autumn Colon later crossed the plate on a successful steal. Though Riley Saldaña grounded out to end the half inning, the Trojans had trimmed the deficit to 5-3.

The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, thanks to sharp pitching and defense from the Trojans. In the top of the seventh, Pahrump made one final push. Sadie Freeman led off with a base hit, and both Autumn and Sunday Colon followed up with singles to load the bases. A second intentional walk of Armendariz allowed Freeman to come home, inching the score to 5-4. With runners still on base, the Lady Trojans were in prime position to tie or even take the lead. But Virgin Valley managed to shut down the surge and recorded the final outs needed to claim the win and advance.
Despite the narrow loss, the Lady Trojans demonstrated heart and skill throughout the contest. Their postseason journey may have come to an end, but the team’s fight until the final pitch was a testament to their competitive spirit and growth over the season.
