In a moment of pride for Pahrump, local community leader Ryan Muccio took home the Gold Award at The Stars of Nevada – Governor’s Points of Light Awards on Thursday, October 24, at The Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.
The Governor’s Points of Light Awards, Nevada’s highest honor for volunteerism, recognize individuals and organizations that embody the state’s core values of service, compassion, cooperation, and the power of partnership. Winners are honored for making meaningful contributions that benefit their communities.
The Gold Award, which Muccio earned in the Community Leadership category, is the top honor among three possible awards: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Although specific criteria are judged by a panel, Muccio described the award as a celebration of leadership, teamwork, and dedication. “I’m incredibly humbled by receiving gold because there were so many amazing and deserving people nominated,” Muccio said. “It’s an honor just to be nominated, let alone win.”
Muccio first learned about the award through Shannon Arimura, the program manager, who informed him that two individuals—Stacy Smith and Deanna O’Donnell—had nominated him for his work. “They had to fill out a lengthy questionnaire and submission form, and the judges even called ‘character witnesses,’” Muccio explained.
His leadership in organizing Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinics over the past decade played a central role in his nomination. The RAM clinics provide free medical, dental, and vision services to underserved communities, a project close to Muccio’s heart. “It takes so many people to make these RAM clinics possible,” Muccio shared. “This award is for all of us and for Pahrump, not just me.”
Reflecting on what set his contributions apart from other nominees, Muccio emphasized the power of collaboration. “The connection and partnership behind these clinics are what make them successful,” he said. “It’s a reminder that it’s not just about me—it’s about the entire community coming together.”
The recognition has reignited Muccio’s passion for volunteerism, especially as he prepares for Pahrump’s 10th annual RAM clinic next October. “The thought of stepping back has crossed my mind, but this award reminded me of how truly important these clinics are to the community,” he said. “I plan to carry out as many RAM clinics as I can.”
Muccio offered heartfelt advice to others hoping to be recognized for their volunteer efforts: “Continue doing what you’re doing with a servant heart. If we volunteer expecting recognition, we’re in it for the wrong reason. The recognition is nice, but it’s about the work and the people you serve.”
In addition to expressing gratitude to Stacy Smith and Deanna O’Donnell for nominating him, Muccio acknowledged the community’s vital role in his success. “The town of Pahrump has been so supportive of everything I do. Passion can only take you so far—support and partnerships make it all possible.”
The Governor’s Points of Light Awards serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of community service and its lasting impact. For Muccio, the award not only celebrates past achievements but also inspires continued efforts in making a difference. “It’s (volunteering) not for everyone, and I get that,” he said. “But at least give it a try—you might be surprised by the difference you can make.”
Muccio’s dedication to Pahrump and his leadership in the RAM clinics have set an example for others to follow, inspiring the next generation of volunteers to step up and serve.
