The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ varsity soccer team kept the pressure on Cristo Rey throughout Wednesday’s home match, Sept. 23, earning an 8-0 victory. Avery Farruggia scored three goals, and five other Trojans found the net.
Pahrump created chances early. Melissa Nunez-Ramirez drove in from the right side for a shot that the Cristo Rey goalkeeper stopped, and Alexis Pryor carried the ball the length of the field before her attempt was blocked. Farruggia broke through about seven minutes into the match, scoring from the left side to put the Trojans ahead 1-0.
Paola Aguilar Alarcon nearly added another when her shot deflected off the side of the goal frame. Minutes later, Farruggia followed an Aguilar Alarcon attempt with a shot of her own to make it 2-0. Aguilar Alarcon then brought the ball up the middle of the field and scored Pahrump’s third goal.
The Trojans continued moving the ball into scoring positions. Nunez-Ramirez and Carmen Gonzales combined on a play that ended with a shot by Aguilar Alarcon, but the goalkeeper made the stop. On another attack, Farruggia sent a ball across the front of the goal that Nunez-Ramirez reached with her foot, sending it just wide. Farruggia and Raylee Smith also struck the crossbar on separate attempts.
Brooklynn Mcmahon made it 4-0 before halftime, following a deflected shot by Sydney Crotty and putting her own attempt into the net. At the other end, goalkeeper Jazmyn Herrera stopped a long Cristo Rey shot that bounced toward goal.
Pahrump added to its lead in the second half. Smith sent a shot into the top of the net for the fifth goal, and Cindal Monahan scored from the left side on a set piece from about 20 yards out, placing the ball in the right corner. Mary Miller followed with a goal from the middle to make it 7-0.
The Trojans kept creating opportunities, including a through ball that sent Mcmahon toward goal and a ball across the field from Josephina Gaitan that reached the side of the net. Nunez-Ramirez, Crotty and other Pahrump players also tested Cristo Rey’s defense as the half continued.
Farruggia capped the afternoon with a shot from the middle for her third goal. The whistle sounded after the score, sealing Pahrump’s 8-0 home win.
