The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ varsity basketball team earned a hard-fought road victory on Monday, January 5, grinding out a 44–40 win against the Sunrise Mountain High School Miners in a physical, high-pressure contest that tested composure, depth, and teamwork from start to finish.
The opening quarter set the tone for the night, with both teams playing aggressive defense and making every possession difficult. Early rebounds from Ella Odegard and Kaitlyn Brown helped settle the Lady Trojans, while Aurora Bowers and Autumn Colon drew fouls attacking the basket. Sunrise Mountain struck first, but Pahrump Valley answered with steady trips to the free-throw line and a strong late-quarter drive by Riley Saldaña to keep the score tight. Despite trailing 9–6 at the end of the first, the Lady Trojans stayed composed as Sunrise Mountain began mixing in junior varsity players due to a scheduling overlap.
Pahrump Valley found its rhythm in the second quarter. Saldaña controlled the paint on both ends, scoring through contact and finishing at the buzzer to give the Lady Trojans a 17–16 lead at halftime. Autumn Colon was active defensively, forcing turnovers and converting steals into points, while the team’s rebounding effort limited second-chance opportunities despite Sunrise Mountain’s heavy reliance on perimeter shooting.

The third quarter showcased Pahrump Valley’s resilience. Kaitlyn Brown hit a key three-pointer on an inbound play, and Addi Nelsen capitalized on the press with a steal and score to extend the lead. The Lady Trojans handled full-court pressure, answered timely baskets from the Miners, and continued to attack inside. Colon, Brown, and Saldaña all contributed offensively, helping Pahrump Valley carry a 32–25 advantage into the final period.
Sunrise Mountain opened the fourth quarter with increased defensive pressure, but the Lady Trojans responded with poise. Nelsen and Saldaña connected repeatedly in the paint, while Autumn Colon and Brown continued to facilitate against the press. Saldaña’s strong finishes through traffic helped stretch the lead, and when she was forced to briefly leave the game after contact, Kaylan Robinson stepped in cold and calmly knocked down two clutch free throws.

The closing minute was packed with tension. Defensive stops, a critical block by Brown, and tight on-ball pressure sealed the outcome. Despite multiple late possessions and second-chance attempts by the Miners, Pahrump Valley held firm, closing out the 44–40 win on the road.
The victory reflected a complete team effort, highlighted by strong interior play from Saldaña, perimeter shooting and defense from Brown, relentless energy from Colon and Nelsen, and key contributions from the entire roster. The Lady Trojans’ ability to handle pressure, respond to momentum swings, and execute late underscored their growth and determination as the season continues.
The Lady Trojans will look to build on the road victory when they return home to Pahrump on Friday, January 9, hosting the Moapa Valley Pirates. Tip-off for the varsity game is scheduled for 5 p.m., giving the team an opportunity to carry its momentum in front of a home crowd.
