Dr. Sean Yim Builds Trust and Community Through 12 Years of Dentistry in Pahrump

For more than a decade, Dr. Sean Yim has been a familiar and trusted name in Pahrump’s dental community. The owner and lead dentist at Affordable Family Dental, Dr. Yim brings both experience and empathy to his work — qualities that have earned him a reputation for professionalism and genuine care among patients of all ages.

Dr. Yim’s journey in dentistry began at the University of Washington, where he completed his undergraduate studies before earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine. After graduating, he began his career at a dental surgery center in Las Vegas. “The majority of my work was with the special needs population,” he explained. “It really gave me perspective early on about the importance of patience, adaptability, and empathy in this field.”

Following his time in surgery, Dr. Yim entered private practice as a partner in Las Vegas before finding his way to Pahrump. Initially, he commuted part-time to assist another dentist. “Honestly, I didn’t know much about Pahrump when I first started coming up here,” he admitted with a laugh. “It just kind of happened gradually. The drive took some getting used to, but after a while, you start to feel connected to the people, the town, and the sense of community.”

In 2014, he officially purchased his Pahrump practice — and he’s been driving in daily ever since. “Yeah, I still commute every day,” he said with a smile. “It’s been 12 years now, and I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else.”

At Affordable Family Dental, Dr. Yim prides himself on offering comprehensive care for every stage of life. “We really try to encompass every aspect of dentistry,” he said. “We see kids, adults, seniors, and special needs patients. We do root canals, oral surgery, dentures, orthodontics — pretty much everything.” His office offers ClearCorrect, an alternative to Invisalign. “It keeps things interesting,” he said. “I like that we don’t restrict ourselves to one specialty — it keeps me on my toes.”

Though the range of services is broad, what stands out most in Dr. Yim’s practice is the atmosphere he and his team have built. “I’ve got the best staff ever,” he said proudly. “We have six assistants in the back and three up front, plus a couple who work remotely. Most of them have been with me since the beginning. We’ve definitely become a family.”

That family-oriented environment extends beyond the clinic, especially during events like the annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic, which provides free medical and dental care to underserved populations. Dr. Yim has been a consistent volunteer since first hearing about the event from a friend over a decade ago. “When I went to my first RAM, I had no idea what to expect,” he said. “You see people showing up at 9 p.m. the night before, sleeping outside just to get dental work done. It’s humbling.”

He recalled meeting volunteers who traveled from as far as New York and North Carolina to serve in Pahrump. “You see these doctors who fly in from across the country and work nonstop for two days — it’s really inspiring,” he said. “It reminds you why you got into this profession.” Over time, Dr. Yim began bringing members of his own team to volunteer as well. “We started with just me and one assistant, then two, and now it’s become something we look forward to every year,” he said.

The weekend also holds personal meaning for Dr. Yim, as it traditionally falls on his daughter’s birthday. “When she was little, she didn’t really understand why I was gone,” he said. “But as she got older, I started bringing her with me. Now, she loves it. It’s become something special for both of us — we help at RAM, then celebrate her birthday afterward.”

Inside his practice, Dr. Yim’s philosophy is centered on empathy and communication — especially when it comes to patients who experience dental anxiety. “A lot of people have had bad experiences,” he said. “I’ve had that same trauma myself. So I get it. You just have to have empathy — really put yourself in their shoes.”

He believes in taking the time to talk patients through procedures and calm their fears. “I tell my assistants all the time — it’s about the patient, always,” he said. “We’re here to make sure they feel safe and comfortable. It’s not about how many people you can get through in a day. It’s about relationships.”

That patient-centered approach extends to follow-up care as well. “I try to remember the little things,” he said. “If a patient tells me about a trip six months ago, I’ll ask how it went when they come back. Or I’ll ask about their kids. It’s just about making it personal again.”

Affordable Family Dental is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every third Friday, Dr. Yim works at a surgery center in Las Vegas, where he provides sedation dentistry under general anesthesia for patients who can’t otherwise be treated in a standard office setting. “It’s great for special needs patients, very young kids, or people with severe dental phobia,” he explained. “We can do full-mouth restorations safely while they’re asleep.”

Although the office doesn’t have an emergency line, patients can still leave messages after hours, and staff often respond quickly. “Even if it’s after hours, my girls are really good about getting messages to me,” he said. “We try to save space in the schedule for emergencies, but it fills up fast. I wish we could take everyone, but we do our best.”

As he reflected on his career, Dr. Yim spoke with gratitude about the town that has supported him since the beginning. “I love what I do, and I love this community,” he said. “Pahrump has been so good to me and my family. I wouldn’t be where I am without the people here.”

Though he remains humble about his accomplishments, his dedication speaks volumes. “I’m not the best,” he said with a grin, “but every day, we strive to be.”
