On Saturday, May 10, Sleep in Heavenly Peace hosted its spring Community Bed Build, bringing together 35 volunteers determined to make a difference in the lives of local children. With sawdust in the air and a spirit of service guiding every movement, the team crafted a total of 24 beds in just one day.
These newly built beds are provided to children in need throughout the county, each one complete with a mattress, pillow, and bedding to ensure every recipient has a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Thirteen of the beds have been delivered, with eleven more still awaiting delivery. Four will be delivered on Thursday, May 22 and President Carmen Murzyn will continue the process of reviewing applications and setting up appointments to bring the rest into the homes of deserving families.
The mission behind Sleep in Heavenly Peace is simple yet deeply impactful: no child should sleep on the floor. By organizing volunteer-driven builds like this one, the nonprofit empowers communities to take direct action in improving children’s lives. And it’s not just about building beds—it’s about building connection. Volunteers of all experience levels come together to measure, cut, sand, and stain the wooden pieces that form the foundation of a better night’s sleep for kids.

This latest event saw participation from an enthusiastic and diverse group, including community members, local organizations, and court program participants. Nye County Judge Kim Wanker and her Drug Court team rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside others, contributing to the day’s success. Nye County Sheriff Joe McGill also stopped by to show his support and appreciation for the effort. Adding a sweet touch to the day, local Girl Scouts troop 207 donated cookies to help keep volunteers fueled and energized.

Despite a smaller group of volunteers and fewer hours on-site than in previous builds, the team pushed past expectations and set a new benchmark for what’s possible. As preparations begin for the next round of deliveries, the Nye County chapter remains focused on its core goal: ensuring that every child has a bed to call their own.
Community members who know of a child in need of a bed can submit a request through the organization’s website at shpbeds.org.
