The Pahrump Valley High School Boys’ JV soccer team secured a solid 3-1 victory over the Moapa Valley Pirates on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. Despite fielding some newer players after several regulars were moved up to varsity, the Trojans found their rhythm and played a cohesive game.
Head Coach Devin Peterson noted the adjustments in the lineup, saying, “Some newer guys who don’t usually get playing time during league play were in, and once they got in the groove, they really played well together.”
The star of the match was Joan Cruz, who netted all three of the Trojans’ goals, completing a hat trick. One of his goals came from an unassisted corner kick, showcasing his precision and skill. Cruz had seven total shots on goal, while Randall Murray assisted on two of the goals and took four shots on goal himself.
Gabe Franco, in his first appearance as the team’s keeper, made four impressive saves, conceding just one goal. “He should feel good about his performance,” Coach Peterson said, highlighting the keeper’s nerves but solid contribution.
Coach Peterson also praised several other players who made significant contributions. Miguel Frias Esparza drew defenders and was double-teamed frequently, opening up opportunities for his teammates. Omar Becerra Gastelum showcased his versatility, playing three positions—defense, midfield, and striker—and consistently pushing the ball forward and winning challenges. Defensively, Arthur Youngblood and James Wilson were instrumental, putting in strong minutes and leaving it all on the field.
The leadership on the team also played a crucial role in the victory. “Leadership is the key to learning on the field. The leadership by Joan Cruz and Rafael Sanchez—guiding the team and keeping morale high—was one of the biggest differences in this game,” Coach Peterson added.
Looking ahead, the Trojans face a tough league opponent on Friday in Boulder, but they go into the game with confidence from this well-earned win.
The players of the game were Joan Cruz, with his hat trick, and Gabe Franco for his standout debut as keeper. “Very impressed with his ability to hang in and do really well despite nervousness and inexperience,” Peterson said of Franco’s performance.
The Trojans will face Boulder City at PVHS, Friday September 20 at 4 p.m.
