Clear Vision – Eye Care with Heart, History, and the Latest in Technology

Clear Vision Eye Centers has become a trusted name in eye care for the Pahrump community, offering more than just updated prescriptions and stylish frames. With a focus on patient education, comfort, and meaningful doctor-patient relationships, the clinic is led by Doctors Joseph Fermin and Ashley Henkel, who are continuing the legacy of excellence established by longtime local optometrist Dr. Dutton.

Dr. Ashley Henkel, who earned her degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, joined the practice shortly before Dr. Dutton’s retirement. “I worked with him for like two months before he fully retired,” she said. Though her time with him was brief, she appreciated the opportunity to witness his patient-first approach—an approach she and her colleague, Dr. Joseph Fermin, continue to uphold. Dr. Fermin, a graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry, brings nearly two decades of experience to the clinic and has seen firsthand how the field has evolved over the years. “There’s lots of stuff out now that we didn’t even actually learn in school,” he said. “It’s leaps and bounds as far as technology is concerned, and that’s only been over the last two decades. It’s a whole lot better from a patient standpoint—safer, faster, and more efficient.”

At Clear Vision, the range of services includes comprehensive eye exams for glasses and contact lenses, as well as full evaluations for eye health. The clinic also sees patients for a wide variety of medical concerns—from eye infections and dry eye to more urgent issues like foreign body removals or sudden changes in vision.

“We can provide both vision and medical care,” explained Dr. Henkel. “Vision insurance typically covers your exam and gives you benefits for glasses or contacts. But if you’re having medical issues like flashes, floaters, eye pain, or allergies, that’s when your medical insurance can be used.”

The practice is supported by a dedicated team that includes three front desk staff, two technicians, and four opticians. Each plays a critical role in providing smooth and attentive care—from verifying insurance and conducting pre-tests to guiding patients through frame selections and order fulfillment.

Technology is a key element in their modern approach to care. The clinic uses the Optos retinal imaging system, which allows doctors to view the back of the eye in detail without the need for dilation. “Retinal imaging is a great screening tool,” said Dr. Fermin. “It’s fast, non-invasive, and provides photographic documentation we can compare over time.”

However, dilation still plays an important role. “There are things the dilation can do that the imaging cannot,” he said. “Dilation allows us to examine the lens more thoroughly and manipulate the eye in ways necessary to evaluate certain structures. Sometimes we use both—imaging helps us document what we find during a dilation.”

He also emphasized the benefit of retinal photos in maintaining consistency across care. “You and I might describe something differently even if we’re seeing the same thing. A photograph provides clear, objective documentation that can be tracked over time, regardless of which practitioner is evaluating it.”

Clear Vision’s diagnostic capabilities make it especially well-suited to handling medical eye concerns, offering an alternative to general urgent care when something suddenly goes wrong. “We’re better equipped,” said Dr. Fermin. “Not to discount what other providers do, but our tools are designed specifically for eye care.”

That level of specialization has become increasingly important in Pahrump, a growing town where residents appreciate access to care close to home. “We’re open Monday through Friday here, and we have an office in Las Vegas open Saturdays,” Dr. Fermin said. “It matters because other specialists, like ophthalmologists, may not always be available.”

Patients of all ages are welcome, from infants just a few months old to seniors over 100. “There’s no age limit,” said Dr. Henkel. “We recommend a first eye exam before a child starts school, but if you notice anything concerning earlier—or if there’s a family history—bring them in sooner.”

Preparing for an appointment is easy. “Just bring your current glasses or contacts if you have them,” she said. “Knowing your history helps, but really, just showing up is the most important step.”

The clinic is accepting new patients and offers several scheduling options, including in-person, over the phone, and online. “We now have more front desk staff and are expanding our ability to handle online and walk-in appointments,” said Dr. Fermin. “But for immediate issues, it’s always best to call ahead so we can prioritize care appropriately.”

Clear Vision Eye Centers is part of a larger network with a unique approach to practice structure. While they benefit from shared management and sourcing resources across the parent company, each branch operates independently based on the preferences of the local doctors. “There’s no pressure from the top,” Dr. Fermin explained. “We’re able to run our clinic the way we feel is best for our patients.”

That independence is central to their mission and reflected in the parent company’s motto: Eyes matter. Eye care matters. Independent optometry matters because it is the highest form of eye care. At Clear Vision, that philosophy is more than just words—it defines how they care for every person who walks through the door.

What truly sets the clinic apart, however, is the time and personal connection each doctor devotes to every patient. “We’re not a place that rushes you through,” said Dr. Fermin. “Our schedule is designed to give us the time to talk with people—not just about their eyes, but about their lives. In a place like Pahrump, that means something.”

He reflected on the way Dr. Dutton built patient loyalty over decades. “Your prescription may not have changed in 30 years, but I guarantee you showed up every year because of Dr. Dutton. That’s the legacy we want to continue.”

With a deep commitment to education, empathy, and personalized care, Clear Vision Eye Center isn’t just seeing patients—they’re truly seeing people.
