A new opportunity for students in Pahrump’s schools may be on the horizon, thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, which is set to propose a site-based mentoring program designed to support students across elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. This initiative, awaiting final approval from Superintendent Dr. Joseph Gent and the Nye County School District, aims to bring personalized mentorship directly to campuses, offering one-on-one support to help students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
The proposed program would pair volunteer mentors, known as “Bigs,” with students, or “Littles,” to meet regularly on school grounds during or after school hours. By keeping sessions on campus, Big Brothers Big Sisters eliminates the need for extra transportation and ensures accessibility for all students. “This program is all about accessibility and making mentorship a natural part of students’ lives,” a representative from Big Brothers Big Sisters shared.
Mentorship has been shown to make a real difference in students’ lives. National studies reveal that children involved in mentoring programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters experience notable improvements, including a 28% increase in “A” grades and a 17% drop in “Ds” and “Fs.” Additionally, students show greater emotional resilience and a 20% reduction in symptoms of depression. The hope is that Pahrump students will experience similar positive outcomes with a mentorship program tailored specifically for their community.
The proposed program also focuses on supporting students who may need additional academic or emotional assistance, including those with special needs or those facing unique challenges. By aligning mentor activities with each school’s educational goals, mentors will complement teachers’ efforts and offer targeted, individualized support to help students overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is also calling on the Pahrump community to get involved. Volunteer mentors are encouraged to apply, as no prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to inspire and uplift students. The organization will provide training and resources to ensure every mentor-student match is set up for success.
With its long-standing commitment to empowering youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a catalyst for positive change in communities across the country. Now, Pahrump could benefit from this impactful program, bringing local students closer to success and building a stronger, more supportive community along the way.
