In his second year as Assistant Principal at Rosemary Clarke Middle School (RCMS), Mr. Zachary Butt brings a wealth of diverse experiences and a steadfast commitment to student achievement. His unconventional journey to education and school administration is both unique and inspiring, shaping his approach to guiding Pahrump’s middle school students toward a thriving future.

Mr. Butt’s path to education wasn’t straightforward. “I actually did not go to school to become a teacher, and was not planning on attending college after high school,” he recalls. Despite being a high-achieving student, his initial career aspirations were in the music industry, where he worked in recording studios. However, the industry’s decline due to the rise of digital downloads led him to rethink his plans. He enrolled at UNLV, where he obtained a degree in Anthropology with plans for underwater archaeology. The financial crash of 2007 led him back to academia, where he pursued a teaching certification. Mr. Butt eventually found his calling in teaching social studies in various schools in Las Vegas, before moving to Pahrump and taking a job at PVHS. His passion for helping teachers and shaping curriculum guided him towards school administration, culminating in his current role at RCMS.

Mr. Butt’s vision for RCMS centers on creating a safe and thriving learning environment through data-driven practices and high-quality, standards-based instruction. “The plan at RCMS is to focus on data-driven practices, align with the district goals of high-quality standards-based instruction, and set up structures for a safe learning environment where the middle school students of Pahrump will thrive,” he explains.

A typical day for Mr. Butt involves a balance of student interaction, parental communication, and administrative duties. As a former dean responsible for handling behavior issues, he brings a proactive approach to student meetings and planning with teachers, while also dealing with disciplinary matters. “Sometimes that entails being proactive with student meetings, working with parents, and planning with teachers; or it could mean partaking in disciplinary hearings at the district office,” he notes.

Engagement with students, parents, and the broader community is a cornerstone of Mr. Butt’s approach. He emphasizes the importance of constant communication and building trust. “No matter what is going on, if there is an opportunity to speak with a parent, I take it,” he says. This commitment extends beyond school hours, as he values every chance to connect with students and parents in the community, reinforcing the relationship between school and community.

Outside his professional life, Mr. Butt’s interests and hobbies reflect a deep connection to youth culture and music, which helps him relate to students. “I am constantly told that I never grew up. It is something that always helps me relate to students,” he shares. Whether discussing the latest anime or video games, he finds common ground with students. His passion for music, shared with his son, provides a creative outlet that balances his professional responsibilities. “My son and I spend most of our time playing music—writing, recording, or going to concerts. It is one of those experiences that simply cleanses the soul,” he adds.

As Mr. Butt continues his journey at RCMS, his blend of unique experiences, commitment to education, and genuine connection with students and the community set a positive tone for the school’s future. With a clear vision and an unwavering dedication to creating a thriving learning environment, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of middle school students in Pahrump.
