The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ B-team volleyball squad used strong serving and a balanced team effort to earn a two-set victory over Cristo Rey at home Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The Trojans controlled the opening set from the service line on their way to a 25-5 win before holding off a Cristo Rey rally to take the second set 25-22 and complete the sweep.
Kelsey Haase set the tone by opening the match with a string of serves that included several aces and helped Pahrump build a 5-0 advantage. Aurora Eyraud later added multiple aces as the Trojans extended their lead to 10-2.
Audaseli Pinder continued the pressure with an ace, while Victoria Glover also served an ace to push the score to 16-4. Hera Moorehead helped close out the set with another productive turn at the service line as Pahrump scored nine of the final 10 points.
Haase again gave the Trojans a fast start in the second set, opening with three consecutive aces. Pinder added another ace as Pahrump established an 8-3 advantage.
Cristo Rey fought back during the middle of the set, trimming a seven-point Pahrump lead to 12-10. The Trojans steadied themselves and began rebuilding their advantage with points created at the net and from the service line.
Pinder placed a tip over the net that Cristo Rey could not return, giving Pahrump a 19-14 lead. The Trojans later recorded a spike for a 22-16 advantage, and Moorehead followed with an ace.
Cristo Rey made one final push, scoring five consecutive points to pull within 23-21. Lyra Tointigh ended the run with a well-placed tip to bring Pahrump to match point. After Cristo Rey scored once more, a serve sailed out to give the Trojans the 25-22 victory and a straight-set win.
