Sweet Pages Brings a Love of Books to Pahrump One Stop at a Time

For Samantha Caufield, the dream of owning a bookstore began long before she had a truck to carry it. An avid reader raising a daughter who shares that enthusiasm, Caufield wanted a business that would make finding a new book part of everyday life in Pahrump. With Sweet Pages, her mobile book truck, she is bringing that idea to local businesses, community events and readers looking for their next story.

The truck offers approximately 250 brand-new books, with selections ranging from books for young children to fantasy and other genres for adults. Rather than asking customers to travel to a permanent storefront, Caufield takes the shelves to them, creating a browsing experience that changes locations while connecting with other local businesses along the way.

“It’s just always been my dream,” Caufield said of owning a bookstore.

That dream has taken shape in a community her family has called home for about a year. Originally from Slidell, Louisiana, outside New Orleans, Caufield moved to Nevada seeking a different pace of life and a change of scenery. Hurricanes were one factor in leaving Louisiana, but the move also offered an opportunity to explore interests in a new setting.

Her family enjoys off-roading, and Nevada presented a different experience from the mud riding familiar to them in the South. Here, trails and desert landscapes offered new ways to spend time outdoors.

After living in Las Vegas for a couple of years, the family decided to move away from city life. Pahrump offered a setting that felt closer to the country lifestyle they preferred.

“This is our little piece of country,” Caufield said.

Caufield is married and has two children, ages 10 and 13, both of whom are homeschooled. Her older child’s reading habits helped bring the bookstore idea into focus. At 13, her daughter can go through roughly a book a day, creating a steady demand for something new to read.

Caufield understood that appetite. As a reader herself, she also wanted more opportunities to browse new books locally. She described finding a limited selection during shopping trips in town, with a broader search often requiring a trip to Las Vegas or an online order.

For a family that reads regularly, those choices left room for another option.

“We just need a way to get more books,” Caufield recalled thinking.

She also wanted the experience to give young readers something to anticipate: a chance to visit the truck, look through the shelves and choose a book in person. The idea extended to adults as well, offering another local destination for people who enjoy reading and discovering new authors.

As Sweet Pages began reaching customers, Caufield found that Pahrump’s reading community was larger than she had realized. Before starting the business, she knew of one local book club. Through the truck, she said, she has since learned of six or seven.

Many of her customers have been women in their mid-30s to around 40, another indication that the interest extends well beyond the children’s books that helped inspire the business.

The response has also introduced her to a wider range of places where a mobile bookstore can fit. Sweet Pages has made stops at various businesses/cafes, while invitations have also included a tattoo event and a hair salon event.

“I’m actually very surprised because I didn’t think we would be booked up as much as we are,” Caufield said.

At the center of those visits is the truck itself, affectionately named Sweet P. The name uses the letter P as a nod to Sweet Pages and continues a family habit of naming their vehicles.

Sweet P came from overseas and has both a steering wheel on the opposite side from a typical American vehicle and a manual transmission. Those features make driving it a distinctive part of operating the business, but its role becomes straightforward once it is parked: the truck opens outward to display its books.

Customers browse from outside, walking around the truck to look through the shelves. They do not need to climb inside or ask Caufield to retrieve every title. The arrangement lets visitors explore what is available, stop at a cover that catches their attention and take their time choosing.

Although the name Sweet Pages and its stops at food businesses may suggest coffee or desserts, the truck’s own offerings center on books and related merchandise. Caufield carries items such as coffee mugs, but she does not serve coffee.

Instead, a stop at a bakery or cafe gives customers the opportunity to combine a book purchase with something from the host business. That connection is part of Caufield’s approach to building Sweet Pages within the community.

Supporting local businesses has been part of Caufield’s approach from the beginning. From the truck’s painting to its stickers, she has turned to Pahrump businesses whenever possible to help bring Sweet Pages to life.

She carries that commitment into the truck’s stops, giving readers a reason to visit other local establishments while browsing for their next book. Those visits can lead to a meal, a treat or another purchase, extending the support beyond Sweet Pages.

The shelves are intended to serve readers across ages and interests. Caufield described a selection that stretches from Ms. Rachel books for little ones to fantasy novels, with books across genres available through the business.

All books currently sold through Sweet Pages are new. Caufield said she does not carry used books at this time, and prices are set at retail. Occasionally, she offers a promotion, such as 10 percent off for customers who visit a particular stop.

She also sees possibilities for Sweet Pages to complement the used-book options already available locally. During the interview, she mentioned Book Worm Haven and expressed hope that more new children’s books entering local households could eventually help expand the children’s titles circulating through the used bookstore.

With room for approximately 250 books on the truck, Caufield cannot display every title a customer might want. She has built requests and ordering into the business so that its reach extends beyond the shelves at any one stop.

Readers looking for a specific book can contact her about ordering it, including having it shipped directly to them. Local customers also do not have to wait for the next scheduled public appearance to get a book. Caufield said she can arrange a local meetup.

Those options make the truck’s changing schedule more flexible for readers who know what they want or cannot attend an upcoming event.

Customer suggestions also help determine what comes aboard next. Caufield accepts requests through Facebook and keeps a notebook near the register where she records authors, subjects and genres people would like to see.

One customer, for example, told her he enjoyed books about real wartime events. She wrote down that interest so she could look for suitable titles when ordering inventory.

The notebook gives those conversations a place in her purchasing decisions. As readers share their interests, Caufield can adjust the selection to reflect the people visiting the truck.

Inventory generally arrives about every two weeks, although the timing depends on sales. New releases receive separate attention: when Caufield plans to carry an upcoming title, she orders ahead so it can be available on the truck on its release date.

That combination of regular additions, advance orders and customer requests helps keep the selection changing for returning shoppers.

Sweet Pages’ schedule is changing as the business grows, too. At the time of the interview, most appearances had been on weekends, but Caufield said requests for weekday visits were beginning to come in.

A book club gathering on a Wednesday evening or a business event on a Tuesday could become a reason for an additional stop. She is open to those opportunities while balancing the business with homeschooling and family responsibilities.

For that reason, readers should expect a posted calendar of appearances rather than assume the truck will operate at the same location or on the same days every week.

Caufield shares the calendar on Sweet Pages’ social media accounts and posts reminders through stories during the week, helping customers keep track of where the truck will be next.

Businesses interested in hosting Sweet Pages can contact her through Facebook or its other social media accounts. The same applies to people planning private gatherings, an area of the business that offers several possibilities beyond a public shopping stop.

The truck can be booked for birthday parties and weddings, giving hosts a way to incorporate books into a celebration. It is also available as a photography prop, including for senior portraits or Sweet 16 photos.

Pricing depends on what the customer wants. For a ticketed event with books included, Caufield said she would work with the organizer to determine the book selection and build the price around those choices. The truck could then carry the designated books for that event.

For an event where guests purchase their own books, she said a typical booking might be approximately $250 to $300 for the evening. Because arrangements vary, the details and cost are determined by the type of event and what the host would like Sweet Pages to provide.

The flexibility of the truck was part of the appeal when Caufield and her family considered how to start the business. They initially looked at storefronts, but opening on a smaller scale gave them a way to introduce the idea and learn how the community would respond.

The mobile format has since become something she enjoys in its own right. It allows Sweet Pages to visit different locations, meet readers in different settings and take part in events that a permanent shop might not reach.

A storefront remains a possibility for the future, but Caufield said she is enjoying the ability to be on the go.

The underlying goal has stayed consistent. When her family once discussed what kind of business she would open if she had a million dollars, her answer was still a bookstore.

Now, that longtime ambition travels through Pahrump in Sweet P, with shelves of new books, a notebook for readers’ requests and a schedule shaped by the businesses and customers welcoming it along the way.
