Trojans Gain Experience and Podium Finishes at Battle of Valhalla

The Pahrump Valley High School junior varsity wrestling team gained valuable mat time and experience while competing in the Battle of Valhalla, held Friday and Saturday, January 16–17, at Valley High School. With 18 Southern Nevada schools represented, the two-day tournament offered a deep field and a strong test for a JV lineup that included both seasoned wrestlers and first-time competitors.

Despite facing tough brackets and multiple returning medalists from across the region, Pahrump Valley’s JV wrestlers showed resilience, growth, and competitiveness throughout the weekend. Several Trojans wrestled multiple matches each day, gaining crucial tournament experience against unfamiliar opponents and contrasting styles.

One of the weekend’s standout performances came from Cameron Scherer, who delivered a dominant showing at 150 pounds. Scherer went undefeated on both days, earning first place on Saturday after advancing through the championship bracket and closing out the title match with a decisive 6–0 decision. His run included a semifinal pin and consistent control on the mat, reflecting both technical skill and composure.

Bryce Whitney also turned in an impressive tournament at 157 pounds. Whitney captured first place on Friday and followed it up with a strong second-place finish on Saturday, collecting key victories by fall, technical fall, and decision. His path to the finals included an early pin and a commanding 15–0 technical fall in the quarterfinals before advancing to the championship bout.

Other Trojans contributed solid efforts across the weight classes. Azael Machuca-Castillo battled to a third-place finish on Friday at 132 pounds, earning a hard-fought decision win in the opening round. Jayden McMahon, Ace Blumer, and Esteban Chavez each recorded wins through falls, technical falls, or major decisions over the course of the tournament, while continuing to gain experience against a deep pool of competition. Alexander Martinez rebounded from Friday’s matches to place second on Saturday at 126 pounds, advancing to the finals after a semifinal pin.

JV Head Coach Mike Colucci emphasized the importance of the weekend beyond the medal count.

“We had a good mix of JV wrestlers on Friday and Saturday. Some have been in the program for 2–3 years, for some it was their first tournament ever,” Colucci said. “There were 18 schools represented from Southern Nevada, and we got to see some solid competition. All our kids competed hard and represented our program and our school well.”

The Battle of Valhalla provided Pahrump Valley’s JV wrestlers with meaningful competition, confidence-building moments, and lessons that will carry forward as the season continues. With podium finishes from Scherer and Whitney and steady progress across the lineup, the Trojans left Valley High School with momentum and valuable experience gained on the mat.
