The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ basketball team put up a determined effort on Monday, December 8, as they hosted the Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Falcons. Though the night brought its share of challenges, the Lady Trojans worked hard on both ends of the floor, showing strong teamwork, hustle, and several momentum-building plays throughout the 42–30 contest.

PVHS opened the night by winning the jump, and Addi Nelsen immediately putting up a three-point attempt. While the shot bounced out, the early rebound and ball movement showed the team was ready to run its offense. Autumn Colon made her presence known early by jumping into passing lanes, recording multiple steals throughout the game and setting the tone on defense. After falling behind 2–0, the Trojans worked patiently until Rylie Saldaña broke through with their first basket at 3:36.

Moments later, after an Ella Odegard three-point attempt, Kaitlyn Brown crashed the boards, secured the rebound, and powered it back up for the bucket, tying the game 4–4. Brown continued to be a spark in the paint, finding the rim again late in the first quarter to give PVHS its first lead, 9–8, just before the buzzer.

The Falcons opened the second quarter with quick points, but the Trojans answered—this time with Brown stealing the ball and finishing a layup at 6:50 to swing momentum back to PVHS. Coral Academy responded with strong drives, giving the Falcons a brief edge, but the Lady Trojans stayed composed. A beautiful pass from Brown to Saldaña in the post added another basket, and the pair combined for a steal-and-score sequence moments later. Their effort sent the game into halftime tied 17–17, with the crowd fully engaged.

The third quarter saw Coral Academy turn up its half-court press, creating challenges for PVHS to find clean passing lanes. Even so, Brown hit a big three from the wing, narrowing the deficit to 20–23. The Trojans continued to run their offensive sets and fight through defensive pressure, with Colon, Saldaña, and Odegard working hard to regain possession and create opportunities. Despite strong individual plays, the Falcons capitalized on free throws and turnovers to build a lead heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Pahrump Valley refused to fold. Julie Briggs drew a foul attacking the basket, giving the Trojans a needed reset. Saldaña added a free throw, while Brown continued battling through contact—her late-game drive resulted in a made basket and an additional foul, as she cut the score to 24–38.

The closing minutes featured some of the Trojans’ best hustle of the night. Aurora Bowers knocked down a free throw, Saldaña added another point at the line, and then came a big highlight: a steal from Saldaña that she turned into a fast-break layup to bring PVHS to 28–42. Seconds later, she repeated the feat—another steal, another sprint down court, another layup—tightening the gap to 30–42 and sending the home crowd into cheers.

Although the Falcons held on for the win, the Lady Trojans showcased resilience, teamwork, and heart from the first tip to the final possession. With strong efforts from all, the foundation is clearly in place for growth as the season progresses.
