Living Free Gym – Fitness as a Cornerstone of Recovery

Physical fitness plays a critical role in addiction recovery, and Living Free Gym, which opened in November 2023 and is located at 301 Oxbow Ave, Suite 2, was created with this philosophy in mind. The gym is more than just a workout facility—it is an integral part of Living Free Health’s holistic approach to recovery, providing a safe and structured environment for individuals to build both physical and mental resilience.

“Exercise is a game changer in recovery,” said Shelley Poerio, CEO and Founder of Living Free Health. “It helps with depression, anxiety, and even cravings. We make fitness a requirement for our transitional housing clients because we know how much of a difference it makes.”

The gym is a therapeutic workplace, offering employment opportunities to those in recovery. “We have clients who come in feeling unsure of themselves, struggling with self-doubt. Giving them responsibility at the gym—whether it’s cleaning, assisting members, or managing equipment—helps them rebuild their confidence,” Poerio explained. “It’s about more than just lifting weights. It’s about lifting yourself up.”

Living Free Gym offers free memberships to all Living Free clients, as well as individuals in other sober living and addiction recovery programs in Pahrump. For those outside of these programs but still working on their mental health and sobriety, discounted memberships are available. “We don’t want cost to be a barrier,” Poerio emphasized. “If fitness can help someone stay clean and feel better about themselves, we want them in here.”

Clients are encouraged to take advantage of structured fitness training programs. “We run group fitness sessions where everyone works together, and it creates this amazing sense of camaraderie,” Poerio added. “A lot of our clients have never been in a structured fitness environment before, and once they start seeing progress—whether it’s in strength, stamina, or just feeling better—it’s incredibly motivating.”

For some, the gym is more than just a place to work out—it’s a stepping stone to employment. “We’re not just helping people get fit,” Poerio explained. “We’re giving them job skills that can translate to future employment. If someone shows dedication, we help them get certified in personal training or gym management. This gives them a real career path.”

Safety is also a priority at Living Free Gym. “When we first opened, we were concerned about having staff alone at certain hours, especially with a homeless encampment nearby,” Poerio said. “So, we initially had two staff members at all times. Over time, with our security systems and the presence of other tenants in the building, we’ve found a good balance.”

Beyond the physical and professional benefits, the gym serves as a crucial social outlet. “Addiction is isolating, and recovery can be too,” Poerio noted. “The gym helps break that isolation. People come in, they see familiar faces, they work toward goals together. It builds community in a way that’s incredibly valuable.”

The gym has also forged strong connections with other organizations in the area. Living Free provides free gym access to residents of Fresh Start Sober Living, and they welcome referrals from other mental health and addiction programs.

“We’re all in this together,” Poerio said. “The more we can provide a sense of purpose, the better chance people have at long-term recovery. This gym isn’t just about fitness—it’s about transformation.”

With its emphasis on holistic health, community support, and long-term recovery, Living Free Gym is yet another example of how Living Free Health and Fitness is changing lives in Pahrump.
