The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans boys’ basketball team faced a formidable opponent on Monday night, taking on the Doral Academy Red Rock Dragons in front of an energetic home crowd. While the Trojans ultimately fell 67-44, the game was filled with intense action, spirited play, and moments of brilliance from the home team.

The game opened with high energy as Doral Academy made the first move, scoring a layup and drawing a foul to set the early pace. The Trojans quickly responded through Aydon Veloz, whose basket tied the game at 2-2, showcasing his strong presence in the paint. Keir Sheppard added a basket to keep the Trojans level at 4-4, midway through the first quarter.

The Dragons, however, capitalized on a series of fast breaks and steals to surge ahead. Despite this, Alejandro Lozano kept the Trojans in contention with a jumper late in the quarter, and Sheppard’s clutch free throws brought the period to a close with Pahrump Valley trailing 18-10. The opening minutes set the stage for a spirited game as the Trojans matched the Dragons’ intensity.

In the second quarter, the Trojans dug deep to stay in the game. Lozano emerged as a standout, repeatedly drawing fouls and converting at the free-throw line. He demonstrated both offensive composure and defensive awareness, making crucial plays to keep the score competitive. Meanwhile, Josh Slusher brought a physical presence inside, scoring on a determined drive to the basket.

Although the Dragons’ sharp shooting from beyond the arc and defensive intensity extended their lead, the Trojans continued to fight. Lozano’s ability to generate offense and Sheppard’s steady contributions helped Pahrump Valley chip away at the deficit. The Trojans entered halftime trailing 32-19 but with the confidence that they could mount a comeback.

The Trojans came out of the locker room with renewed energy. Slusher quickly added a basket, and Antwahn Jackson’s hustle and determination paid off with a rebound and a three-point play that gave the team a boost. Lozano’s defensive instincts shone as he stole the ball and drew a shooting foul, converting both free throws to bring the score to 48-30.

However, Doral’s well-coordinated offense and defensive pressure made it challenging for the Trojans to close the gap. The Dragons’ ability to hit key three-pointers and execute fast breaks kept the Trojans at bay. By the end of the third quarter, the Dragons had extended their lead to 52-30, but the Trojans refused to back down.

The final quarter saw the Trojans continue to play with heart and determination. Jamiah Mendenhall made an immediate impact, scoring off a rebound to energize the team. Sheppard’s relentless efforts at the free-throw line added more points, and his defensive hustle led to a steal and a quick basket, showcasing his two-way abilities.

Jackson added a highlight with a long three-pointer, igniting cheers from the crowd. Caden Briscoe also contributed from the free-throw line after a technical foul against the Dragons. Despite the scoreline, the Trojans played with intensity until the final whistle, determined to give their fans a strong performance.

While the Dragons’ sharp shooting, defensive pressure, and transition play proved to be the deciding factors in the game, the Trojans left everything on the court. Key players such as Veloz, Lozano, Sheppard, Slusher, Jackson, and Mendenhall showed flashes of potential that promise great things as the season progresses.

This game provided valuable experience for the team, highlighting areas for growth and opportunities for improvement. The Trojans’ grit and determination are sure to serve them well in upcoming matchups. With continued support from the community, Pahrump Valley looks forward to turning lessons from tough games like this into future victories. Fans are encouraged to attend the next home game on Friday, January 10th and cheer on the Trojans as they continue their season with high hopes and unwavering effort.
