The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ basketball team displayed resilience and determination during their three-game appearance at the Bullhead City Shoot-Out tournament in Arizona from December 19 to 21. Facing tough opponents, the Trojans worked hard and demonstrated their potential to grow as a team throughout the season.

In their opening game on December 19, the Trojans faced Lincoln County High School (Panaca, NV). Both teams started slow, with only one player on each team contributing to the first-quarter scoring. Tramaine Burras put Pahrump on the board with a two-point basket and a free throw, while Lincoln County managed to edge ahead, ending the quarter 7-3. In the second quarter, Alejandro Lozano gave the Trojans an offensive boost with two three-point shots and a two-point field goal, adding 8 points to the scoreboard. Burras chipped in with another two-pointer, bringing the Trojans’ halftime total to 13. Despite their efforts, the Lynx capitalized on their opportunities and led 25-13 at the half.

The Trojans kept pushing in the second half, with contributions from Burras and Aydon Veloz, who combined for 7 points in the third quarter. However, Lincoln County extended their lead, finishing the quarter 35-20. Pahrump delivered their strongest offensive effort in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points from Lozano, Veloz, Burras, Caden Briscoe, Antwahn Jackson, and Trae Plein. Despite their strong finish, the Lynx held on for a 43-31 win.

On December 20, the Trojans faced a tough opponent in Adelanto High School (Saints). Pahrump started strong, outscoring Adelanto 7-4 in the first quarter, with points from Jack Toth, Veloz, and Lozano. However, the Saints dominated the second quarter, adding 21 points to their tally while the Trojans managed only 4, entering halftime trailing 25-11.

The Trojans continued to fight in the second half, with Jackson, Burras, and Toth contributing points in the third quarter. Adelanto, however, maintained their momentum, scoring 18 points in the third and 15 in the fourth while holding Pahrump scoreless in the final period. The Trojans fell 57-18 but gained valuable experience playing against a highly skilled team.

Determined to bounce back, the Trojans delivered a strong performance on December 21 against River Valley High School (Dust Devils) from Mohave, AZ. Pahrump came out focused, scoring 8 points in the first quarter with contributions from Lozano, Jackson, and Burras. The Dust Devils kept the game close, ending the quarter 8-6 in favor of the Trojans.

In the second quarter, Pahrump found their rhythm offensively, adding 15 points to their total. Keir Sheppard stood out in the period, scoring 10 points that included a three-pointer and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. By halftime, Pahrump held a narrow 23-20 lead.

The third quarter saw the Trojans extend their lead, adding 17 points. Burras led the effort with three two-point baskets and two free throws, while Jackson, Veloz, Toth, and Lozano also contributed. Strong defense held the Dust Devils to just 7 points, giving Pahrump a 40-27 lead going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans kept their momentum, adding 16 points, most of which came from free throws. Lozano and Sheppard were key contributors at the line, combining for eight points. Additional scoring from Veloz, Toth, Jackson, and Burras secured Pahrump’s 56-42 victory.

Despite facing challenging opponents, the Trojans showed consistent effort and growth throughout the tournament. Their hard work paid off in their final game, and the experience they gained will be valuable as they move forward in the season.

The Trojans will next compete in the Mesquite Madness tournament, where they will face Virgin Valley on Thursday, December 26, at 2 p.m.
