The Pahrump Valley High School boys’ basketball team closed out the Mesquite Madness tournament with standout performances and their first official tournament win, demonstrating growth and potential for the remainder of the season.
On December 28, the Trojans faced Pinecrest Academy Cadence and delivered an inspired performance. With improved shooting and a strong start, Pahrump scored 18 points in the first quarter, led by Alejandro Lozano with six points, Lucas Gavenda with six points, and contributions from Aydon Veloz, Keir Sheppard, and Josh Slusher. By halftime, the Trojans held a 24-15 lead, thanks to Lozano’s two three-point baskets in the second quarter.
Though the Cougars narrowed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 11-5, Pahrump maintained their composure. Caden Briscoe and Veloz each scored two points, while Gavenda added a free throw. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans pulled away, scoring 13 points to seal a 42-32 victory. Lozano went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, Antwahn Jackson added three free throws, and Josh Slusher made two more. Jack Toth’s two late baskets helped secure the win, providing a morale boost for the team.
The final game of the tournament was a closely contested battle against Somerset Sky Pointe. Despite falling 56-50, the Trojans delivered their highest-scoring performance of the tournament. Sheppard’s three-point shooting and Toth’s offensive contributions kept the game competitive throughout. Pahrump outscored the Eagles 13-7 in the first quarter, with Lozano and Gavenda making critical plays.
In the second quarter, the Eagles turned the tide, scoring 16 points to Pahrump’s 9. Scoring for the Trojans included two-point baskets by Sheppard and Veloz and a three-pointer by Toth. After halftime, the Trojans added 13 points, with Lozano sinking a three-pointer, Toth hitting two from beyond the arc, and Gavenda contributing another two points.
The fourth quarter was another tight battle, with Pahrump adding 15 points. Sheppard sank three three-pointers, while Toth and Veloz added key baskets. Burras contributed a free throw to close the scoring for the Trojans. Despite their efforts, the Eagles’ consistent free-throw shooting secured their victory.
The Mesquite Madness tournament provided the Trojans with invaluable experience and moments of brilliance. With highlights like their win over Pinecrest and some strong performances late in the tournament, the Trojans have much to build on as they continue their season.
