The Pahrump Valley High School (PVHS) Trojans JV girls’ basketball team played an exciting game against the Boulder City Eagle on Wednesday, January 8, and secured a 35-29 victory. With a combination of sharp shooting, strategic plays, and unwavering effort, the Trojans came out on top in a close contest.
The game started with Autumn Colon setting the tone early, earning a trip to the free-throw line and sinking both shots to put PVHS on the board. Addi Nelsen followed with a basket, giving the Trojans an early 4-0 lead. The first quarter remained competitive, with both teams battling for control. Natalia Vallin’s clutch three-pointer from the right corner in the final minutes of the quarter propelled PVHS to a 7-5 lead, which they held at the buzzer.
In the second quarter, the Trojans extended their lead with contributions from Sydney Crotty, who added a free throw, and Addi Nelsen, who drained a three-pointer. Natalia Vallin continued her strong play, driving for a layup to bring the score to 13-5. Despite some missed opportunities at the free-throw line, PVHS maintained their composure, and Autumn Colon closed the half with a layup, sending the Trojans into halftime leading 17-9.
The third quarter saw the Eagles mount a comeback, narrowing the gap and briefly taking the lead. With Nelsen temporarily sidelined due to illness, PVHS relied on the efforts of Crotty and Cindal Monahan to keep the game within reach. Crotty’s layup tied the game at 23-23 late in the quarter, but the Eagles answered back to edge ahead 26-23 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans worked hard and were able to reclaim the lead. Julie Briggs contributed on an inbound play to cut the deficit, and Autumn Colon tied the game at 27-27 with a well-timed basket. Moments later, Addi Nelsen returned to the game and made an immediate impact, scoring a critical full-court layup to put PVHS back in front. Staisha Perry added a key free throw, and the Trojans’ defense stepped up with a full-court press that kept the Eagles at bay.
With just over a minute remaining, a creative inbound play led to a basket that extended PVHS’s lead to 33-29. Crotty sealed the game with another score in the closing seconds, ensuring the Trojans’ victory.
The PVHS JV girls displayed exceptional effort and teamwork throughout the game, with contributions from every player. Despite some setbacks, their focus and determination carried them to a closely-contested win.
