The Pahrump Valley High School varsity boys’ basketball team faced a formidable challenge against The Meadows Mustangs on Thursday, January 16th, at home. Although the Trojans fell 71-44, they showed tenacity and teamwork, battling hard throughout the game and refusing to back down against one of the top teams in their division.

The starting lineup for the Trojans included Alejandro Lozano, Keir Sheppard, Aydon Veloz, Antwahn Jackson, and Josh Slusher. The game began with The Meadows quickly putting points on the board, but Sheppard responded by drawing a foul on a drive to the basket and sinking both free throws to get Pahrump on the board. Slusher and Lozano worked to create scoring opportunities, with Lozano driving through defenders for a layup to add two points late in the first quarter. Lucas Gavenda made a statement on defense with a block at the buzzer to close the quarter, which ended with The Meadows leading 22-6.

The second quarter saw the Trojans finding a rhythm. Jackson and Gavenda connected on a play to score early, and Lozano followed up with a strong drive for another basket. Veloz made an impact defensively, turning a block into a quick scoring opportunity for Jackson. With contributions from Slusher and Sheppard, the Trojans pushed back against The Meadows’ lead, closing out the half at 37-20.

In the third quarter, the Trojans came out with renewed energy. Lozano started the quarter with a basket, followed by Sheppard driving into the lane for consecutive scores to cut into The Meadows’ lead. Gavenda earned a trip to the free-throw line and later assisted Sheppard on a three-pointer that drew cheers from the crowd. Although The Meadows responded with sharp shooting from beyond the arc, the Trojans continued to fight, ending the quarter at 55-35.

The final quarter highlighted Pahrump’s determination to compete until the end. Gavenda grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback, while Lozano drained a long-range three-pointer. Sheppard added points from a drive to the basket and a free throw after drawing a foul. Late in the game, Eric Figueroa Renteria contributed a solid basket, adding to the Trojans’ effort. Though The Meadows maintained their scoring pace, Pahrump continued to play hard and make key plays.
