The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans varsity boys basketball team claimed their first league win of the season on Thursday, January 23, with a 53-49 victory over the Sports Leadership & Management (SLAM) Bulls in an intense game at SLAM. The Trojans relied on balanced scoring and timely plays to secure the narrow win.
The first quarter began cautiously, with both teams struggling to establish offensive rhythm. SLAM managed to edge ahead with 6 points, while the Trojans answered with 4. Alejandro Lozano and Keir Sheppard each contributed a 2-point basket to keep Pahrump within striking distance.
The game heated up in the second quarter as the Trojans unleashed a 21-point scoring surge. Sheppard took control, sinking two 3-point shots, a 2-point field goal, and two free throws for a total of 10 points in the quarter. Jack Toth also stepped up with two 3-point baskets and a free throw, adding 7 points to the tally. Lozano and Tramaine Burras chipped in with 2 points each. SLAM fought back with 15 points, but the Trojans’ offensive momentum gave them a 25-21 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw Pahrump extend their lead, outscoring SLAM 18-10. Sheppard once again delivered a standout performance, contributing 12 points with a mix of 2-point field goals, a 3-pointer, and a free throw. Lucas Gavenda and Toth each added 2 points, while Antwahn Jackson and Josh Slusher provided key baskets. Aydon Veloz added a point from the free-throw line to round out the Trojans’ impressive quarter.
Despite trailing for most of the game, the SLAM Bulls mounted a fierce comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points. However, the Trojans managed to hold their ground, adding 10 points to their total to maintain the lead. Sheppard scored another 2 points, Gavenda and Jackson each added a 2-point field goal, and Slusher made two critical 2-point baskets to seal the win.
With contributions from nearly the entire roster, the Trojans showcased teamwork and determination to secure their first league win of the season. Sitting at 1-8 in league play, this victory is a bright spot in a challenging season and a testament to their ability to compete and execute when it matters most.
