The Pahrump Valley High School varsity boys’ basketball team took to their home court on Friday, January 10, to face the Sloan Canyon Pirates in a game packed with action and intensity. Despite a strong push in the final quarter, the Trojans came up short, falling 66-56.
The game opened with energy as the Trojans’ starters—Alejandro Lozano, Josh Slusher, Aydon Veloz, Keir Sheppard, and Jack Toth—looked to set the tone. Sheppard struck first with a clean basket early on, but Sloan Canyon quickly responded with a series of accurate shots to establish a lead. While the Trojans struggled to capitalize on free-throw opportunities, a three-pointer from Toth broke the scoring drought, keeping Pahrump within reach. By the end of the first quarter, a quick pass from Sheppard to Antwahn Jackson for a layup gave the Trojans some momentum, closing the period at 19-9 in favor of Sloan Canyon.
In the second quarter, the Trojans began to pick up speed offensively. Lozano added to the scoreboard with a well-timed jumper, and Lucas Gavenda contributed key points off a steal. Slusher’s free-throw shooting added another point to Pahrump’s tally, while Veloz and Toth provided steady play to keep the game competitive. The Trojans entered halftime trailing 30-20 but with clear signs of improved coordination on both ends of the court.
After the break, the Trojans worked to close the gap. Lozano and Veloz connected for a quick basket, and Gavenda’s hustle on a fast break added to the score. Toth and Lozano each nailed three-pointers, energizing the team and fans alike. Pahrump also managed several impressive plays inside, with Sheppard and Gavenda finding scoring opportunities under the basket. The Trojans closed the third quarter with 36 points but remained behind as Sloan Canyon maintained their lead.
The fourth quarter was a showcase of quick plays and sharp shooting from Pahrump. Sheppard made several drives to the hoop, scoring critical points and drawing fouls. Lozano displayed his versatility, sinking a three-pointer and following up with a drive to the rim for two more. Jackson’s work on the boards translated into extra points, and Sheppard’s steal and layup late in the game brought the Trojans within striking distance. However, Sloan Canyon’s consistency at the free-throw line and timely scoring held Pahrump at bay.
The game concluded with a 66-56 scoreline, but the Trojans left it all on the court, showcasing improved teamwork and creating several standout plays. With this game as a building block, Pahrump Valley High School’s boys’ basketball team looks to refine their approach and deliver strong performances in the matches ahead. Fans have much to look forward to as the season continues.
