Torrie Martin, a 2018 graduate of Pahrump Valley High School (PVHS), has charted a remarkable path from a small-town high school student to a dedicated registered nurse in Las Vegas. Her journey reflects her passion for helping others, her commitment to her community, and her strong work ethic developed over the years.
Reflecting on her time at PVHS, Torrie recalls fond memories that shaped her high school experience. “Some of my fondest memories include winning Homecoming Queen, Friday night football games, halftime dance performances, spending time with friends, and dance competition season,” she shares. Football and homecoming season were her favorites, highlighting the vibrant community spirit that PVHS fostered. As a member of the dance team, Torrie found a deep sense of belonging and joy. She credits her wonderful coaches and teammates for making her high school years unforgettable, particularly enjoying performing at games and during national competitions.
After graduating, Torrie pursued a degree in nursing at Nevada State University. Her passion for nursing was sparked at an early age and grew stronger as she witnessed loved ones, including her grandfather, battle serious illnesses. “I knew at an early age that I wanted to become a nurse,” Torrie explains. “As I got older and witnessed loved ones passing away, my desire to become a nurse became even stronger.” She was driven by a caring heart and a love for science, knowing that nursing was the right profession for her.
While at Nevada State University, Torrie excelled academically, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a minor in Psychology. She reflects on the intense and demanding nature of nursing school, describing it as one of the most stressful times of her life. “Nursing school became a full-time job Monday through Friday, with weekends dedicated to studying,” she says. Despite the challenges, Torrie remained committed, supported by her family and friends, whom she considers her rock through it all.
Now working as a registered nurse in Las Vegas, Torrie continues to demonstrate her dedication to patient care. She recently received a Daisy pin, a prestigious award that recognizes extraordinary nurses for their compassionate care. “This was a huge achievement for me, considering I have only been a nurse for one year,” Torrie shares proudly. Her compassionate approach to nursing was influenced by her experiences with her grandfather’s illness, where she witnessed both compassionate and uncompassionate healthcare workers. This experience solidified her commitment to being the positive force that patients and their families remember during difficult times.
Torrie acknowledges that her career is not without its challenges. She faces the reality of death regularly, a challenge she admits is not something one can simply overcome. “I have learned to find peace knowing in those final moments, I gave my patient and their families everything I have,” she reflects. She understands that her role is to provide the best patient care possible, without judgment, even in the most challenging situations. This perspective has helped her navigate the emotional demands of her profession, allowing her to maintain a balance between empathy and professionalism.
In addition to her work in nursing, Torrie has future aspirations to continue her education and professional development. She is eager to become a Nurse Practitioner with a focus on women’s health and wellness, aiming to expand her knowledge and skills to better serve her patients. She also looks forward to transitioning into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) soon, where she believes she will continue to grow and thrive as a nurse.
Outside of her professional life, Torrie enjoys a variety of hobbies that keep her grounded and connected to her roots. A lover of the outdoors, she cherishes camping, fishing, and spending time at the lake, activities that have been a significant part of her life since childhood. She shares a close bond with her sister, who she describes as her best friend, and they enjoy spending as much time together as possible. Torrie also loves hunting, a passion she developed at the age of 12, which has become a unique bonding experience with her father. Alongside her boyfriend, Keaton, who also works in the medical field, Torrie enjoys road trips, jet skiing, and attending country music concerts.
Living in Las Vegas with Keaton and their two puppies, Whiskey and Willow, Torrie finds joy in balancing her busy professional life with her personal interests. “It’s nice to be with someone who can understand the tough days that come with working in a field that can include life and death situations,” she says, appreciating the mutual support they provide each other. Despite their hectic schedules, they prioritize spending quality time together and with their families, ensuring that their relationship and personal lives are well-balanced.
Torrie remains connected to her high school community and the broader Pahrump Valley area, often keeping up with PVHS sports teams and attending games with her family. She values these connections and the sense of community they bring, reflecting fondly on her small-town roots.
Looking ahead, Torrie is excited about the possibilities in her career and personal life. Her journey from a high school student to a compassionate nurse in Las Vegas exemplifies her desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. She is proud to be a PVHS alumna and looks forward to continuing to contribute to her community and profession in meaningful ways. “Being a nurse has been a lifelong goal, but it is just a stepping stone,” she says, embodying the spirit of continuous growth and learning that defines her approach to life and work.
