The Pahrump Valley High School Girls’ JV basketball team faced a tough opponent in the 5A Desert Oasis Diamondbacks on their home court, putting forth a determined effort in a game that stayed competitive until the final minutes. Despite their hard work, the Trojans ultimately fell 27-37 in a game filled with strong defensive plays and moments of teamwork.

The game began with an assertive start for the Trojans. Early in the first quarter, Ella Odegard delivered a well-placed pass from the elbow to Sydney Crotty, who scored from the block to give Pahrump a 2-0 lead. The Trojans’ defense kept the Diamondbacks in check initially, but a pair of late first-quarter scores from Desert Oasis put the Trojans behind 5-8 heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Pahrump worked hard to stay within reach. Julie Briggs made a smart play to find Cindal Monahan in the paint for a much-needed basket, cutting the deficit to five. Later, Addi Nelsen drew a foul on a shot and converted one of her free throws. As the quarter wound down, Crotty scored on an inbound play with just eight seconds left, narrowing Desert Oasis’s lead to 12-15 at halftime.

The Trojans picked up the pace in the third quarter. Crotty scored under the basket early to bring Pahrump within one point, and Nelsen followed up with an aggressive drive to the hoop, earning a foul and completing a three-point play to tie the game at 17-17. The team’s defensive pressure paid off late in the quarter, with a steal leading to a key layup by Crotty, giving Pahrump a slim 21-22 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Desert Oasis regain control of the game. The Diamondbacks extended their lead with a series of quick scores, but the Trojans refused to back down. Nelsen made a sharp pass to Aurora Bowers, who converted for two points, and Nelsen added several points from the free-throw line in the closing minutes. Crotty also stepped up late in the game, hitting two free throws with less than a minute remaining to bring the Trojans closer. However, Desert Oasis maintained their advantage, closing out the game with a 27-37 victory.

Throughout the game, the Trojans displayed grit and teamwork, with contributions from players across the roster. Crotty led the team offensively with key points under the basket and from the free-throw line, while Nelsen’s playmaking and scoring kept Pahrump competitive. Odegard, Monahan, Briggs, Vallin, and Bowers also made significant contributions, showcasing the depth and potential of the JV squad.
