The Pahrump Valley High School JV boys’ basketball team hosted the Boulder City Eagles on Monday, January 13, delivering an exciting and hard-fought game that ended in a 57-48 victory for the Trojans.
The game began with intensity as both teams implemented full-court presses, creating a fast-paced back-and-forth battle. Early on, Lucas Gavenda scored a layup to tie the game at 2-2, and the Trojans quickly showed their determination by breaking Boulder’s press with effective teamwork. Jack Toth added to the Trojans’ momentum with a full-court layup to keep the score tied at 6-6, while Samuel Mendoza’s three-pointer from the corner later in the quarter brought the score to 13-13. Despite a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Boulder to close the first quarter, Pahrump trailed by just one point, 16-15.
In the second quarter, Pahrump turned up the heat, showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess. Mendoza’s three-pointer from the left side gave the Trojans a 21-19 lead, and Gavenda capitalized on his own rebound to extend the advantage. Trae Plein hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Jamiah Mendenhall followed with a layup to push the Trojans ahead 28-22. Gavenda scored again just before halftime, giving Pahrump a narrow 30-28 lead going into the break.
The Trojans came out strong in the third quarter, with Plein scoring an early corner shot and an open layup to extend the lead to 34-28. Gavenda continued to dominate inside, assisted by Plein, and added critical points from the right block. By the end of the third quarter, Pahrump had pulled away to a commanding 45-35 lead.
In the final quarter, the Eagles ramped up their full-court press, but the Trojans remained composed. Mendoza and Gavenda added points, and Plein delivered key assists and free throws. Toth shone late in the game, scoring a three-pointer from the right wing and immediately stealing the ball for a layup, giving the Trojans a 55-40 advantage with just under three minutes to play. Despite Boulder’s late push, the Trojans held firm, with Plein sealing the deal by sinking a free throw in the closing seconds.
The Trojans showcased teamwork, resilience, and determination throughout the game, securing a well-earned 57-48 victory. This win reflects the hard work and dedication of the JV boys’ basketball team as they continue to build momentum this season.
