Pahrump Valley Girls’ Varsity Basketball Faces a Tough Challenge Against Desert Oasis

The Pahrump Valley Trojans’ girls’ varsity basketball team faced a formidable opponent in the Desert Oasis Diamondbacks at home on January 14. Despite their best efforts, the Trojans struggled against the Diamondbacks’ aggressive and fast-paced style of play, ultimately falling 29-65.

The game started with Desert Oasis setting the tone, scoring the first basket and quickly building momentum with a combination of sharp shooting and tenacious defense. Employing a full-court press throughout the game, the Diamondbacks made it difficult for the Trojans to move the ball effectively. The press caused numerous turnovers, leading to quick breakaway points and limiting the Trojans’ opportunities to establish their offense.

Pahrump’s starters—Savannah Thompson, Ryleigh Denton, Trinity French, Riley Saldana, and Nala Dalton—worked hard to push through the relentless pressure. Riley Saldana stood out with her determination, consistently driving to the basket and drawing fouls. She spent significant time at the free-throw line, where she converted key points for the Trojans, finishing as the team’s leading scorer.

Sydney Crotty provided additional offensive highlights for the Trojans, scoring from mid-range and connecting with Saldana for a three-point play in the third quarter. Crotty’s hustle and willingness to take shots under pressure gave the team a boost during challenging stretches. Meanwhile, Ryleigh Denton added to the scoreboard with a confident three-pointer late in the fourth quarter and a strong drive inside earlier in the game, showcasing her ability to penetrate the Diamondbacks’ defense.

The Diamondbacks, however, maintained control throughout the game with their balanced offensive attack. Their shooters were particularly effective from beyond the arc, hitting several three-pointers that widened the gap on the scoreboard. They also capitalized on their defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and converting them into fast-break points.

Savannah Thompson drew a late shooting foul, adding to the Trojans’ total in the final moments, while Trinity French and Nala Dalton contributed with their defensive efforts and rebounds. Despite the scoreline, the Trojans displayed moments of teamwork and resilience, fighting to the final buzzer.

The crowd at the PVHS gym showed their unwavering support, cheering on the Trojans as they battled through the Diamondbacks’ aggressive gameplay. Though the loss was tough, it provided valuable experience for the Trojans as they continue to develop their strategies against high-pressure defenses like Desert Oasis.

The Trojans will look to regroup and use this game as a learning opportunity, focusing on breaking presses and finding ways to execute under pressure as they prepare for their next matchup.
