The Pahrump Valley High School baseball team showed resilience and determination on the road Tuesday, March 24, going toe-to-toe with a strong 5A opponent in Green Valley. Despite a 7-5 loss, the Trojans delivered a gritty performance highlighted by timely hitting and steady defensive moments.

Pahrump got things started early in the top of the first when Tony Whitney led off with a sharp line drive single to left field. While the Trojans were unable to capitalize in the opening frame, they quickly made their presence felt defensively. With Vinny Whitney on the mound, Green Valley was retired in order with a groundout to shortstop Tony Whitney, a lineout to center fielder Kayne Horibe and a strikeout to close the inning.

The game remained tight through the early innings, with both teams working through defensive plays and base runners. Green Valley struck first in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a couple of opportunities to push across a run and take a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning for Pahrump, the Gators added to their lead in the bottom half. With Dominik Wilson taking over pitching duties, Green Valley capitalized on a series of hits and walks to extend its advantage to 5-0.

The Trojans responded in a big way in the top of the fourth inning, putting together their most explosive offensive stretch of the game. After Ben Cimperman reached on a hit-by-pitch and courtesy runner Dominic Chiancone entered, Pahrump began to rally. Kayne Horibe delivered the spark with a hard-hit triple to right field, bringing in a run before coming around to score himself.

The momentum continued as Dominik Wilson, Sammy Mendoza and Jacob Selbach each worked walks to load the bases. Tony Whitney added a sacrifice fly to center field, and the Trojans took advantage of a passed ball to bring another run across. By the time the inning came to a close, Pahrump had trimmed the deficit to just one, 5-4.

On the mound, Tony Whitney took over in the bottom of the fourth and delivered a clean inning, highlighted by strong infield play. The Trojans’ defense continued to settle in, giving their offense a chance to keep pace.

Kayne Horibe continued to contribute at the plate in the fifth, collecting a single, while the Trojans stayed aggressive on the basepaths throughout the game.

Green Valley added two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double followed by a home run, stretching the lead to 7-4. Still, Pahrump refused to back down.

In the top of the sixth, the Trojans once again put pressure on the Gators. After walks from Sammy Mendoza, Tony Whitney and Anthony Montanez, Vinny Whitney came through with a clutch single to right field, driving in a run and narrowing the gap to 7-5.

On the defensive side, Kayne Horibe stepped in on the mound in the bottom of the sixth and delivered a solid inning, limiting Green Valley’s opportunities and keeping the Trojans within striking distance heading into their final at-bat.

Although Pahrump was unable to complete the comeback, the effort against a 5A opponent showcased the team’s fight, depth and ability to respond under pressure. The Trojans’ fourth-inning rally and continued push late in the game highlighted a group that continues to compete at a high level.

With strong contributions throughout the lineup and multiple pitchers stepping up, Pahrump Valley continues to build momentum as the season progresses, gaining valuable experience against top-tier competition.
