The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ basketball team delivered a gritty and competitive performance Friday night in Moapa, staying within striking distance for all four quarters before falling 49–44 to the Moapa Valley Pirates in a tightly contested matchup.
Both teams opened the game playing aggressive defense, with scoring opportunities difficult to come by in the early minutes. Ella Odegard drew the first foul of the game for the Trojans and earned a trip to the free-throw line, setting the tone for Pahrump’s willingness to attack the basket. Moapa answered with an early field goal before Autumn Colon picked up three fouls midway through the opening quarter, forcing the Trojans to adjust their defensive rotations earlier than expected.
Pahrump responded with strong ball movement that produced its first field goal of the night when Addi Nelsen initiated the offense, working the ball inside to Odegard, who quickly found Riley Saldaña cutting to the basket for two points. Moapa continued to apply heavy pressure defense, creating challenges for the Trojans in advancing the ball past half court, but Pahrump stayed composed and found ways to generate offense through rebounding and hustle plays.

Jules Ondrisko provided a spark late in the first quarter, securing an offensive rebound and finishing strong inside. Kaitlyn Brown later added a key basket in the closing seconds after the Trojans battled for a rebound, trimming the deficit to 15–7 at the end of the first period.
The Trojans began to settle in during the second quarter, tightening the game behind defensive stops and free-throw opportunities. Ondrisko opened the scoring for Pahrump with a trip to the line, and Saldaña followed with an offensive rebound and free throw to cut into Moapa’s lead. Odegard nearly connected from long range, but Olivia Veloz battled through traffic for a strong putback to keep the Trojans within reach.
Moapa responded with a three-pointer and a transition basket to stretch its advantage, but Pahrump answered again at the free-throw line when Brown knocked down two bonus free throws. Moments later, Brown connected from beyond the arc, igniting the Trojan bench and closing the gap to five points. The physical tone of the game continued as Moapa was assessed a technical foul, and Brown stepped to the line. Although she missed the technical free throws, she quickly made up for it by hitting a clutch three-pointer while drawing contact, converting the four-point play opportunity to bring Pahrump within two.
With less than 10 seconds remaining in the half, Brown struck again, drilling another three-pointer that gave the Trojans their first lead of the game, sending Pahrump into halftime with a narrow 23–22 advantage and clear momentum.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter. Moapa briefly reclaimed the lead with an early basket before Brown attacked the lane for a strong interior finish to put Pahrump back in front. Saldaña followed with an aggressive drive through traffic, finishing at the rim to extend the Trojan lead.
Moapa responded with another basket to even the score, but Brown once again delivered at the free-throw line after being fouled on a three-point attempt, converting two of three shots to put Pahrump back on top. The Pirates answered with a three-pointer of their own, only to see Nelsen immediately counter with a deep three to maintain the Trojans’ offensive rhythm.
Odegard continued to battle on the boards, securing a rebound and scoring on a putback midway through the quarter. Veloz added defensive energy with a timely steal and fast-break drive that resulted in another trip to the free-throw line. As the quarter wound down, both teams traded trips to the line, with Moapa holding a slim 34–32 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

The fourth quarter opened with Odegard delivering one of her strongest stretches of the night. She knocked down a three-pointer early, then followed with a strong move inside for two points. Moments later, Odegard connected from long range again, helping the Trojans keep pace in what had become a high-pressure, possession-by-possession battle.
Moapa responded with a steal and fast-break basket before Odegard answered with another well-timed inbound play that resulted in a score inside. Veloz continued to stay aggressive defensively and on the boards, while Brown and Saldaña remained active attacking the basket and fighting for second-chance opportunities.
The game tightened in the final minutes as Moapa found back-to-back baskets to regain the lead. Pahrump continued to push offensively, with Veloz drawing a foul on a three-point attempt and later battling for rebounds in traffic. However, foul trouble proved challenging late as Saldaña fouled out after being assessed a technical foul during a contested sequence, giving Moapa additional free-throw opportunities.

Despite the setback, the Trojans continued to fight until the final seconds, forcing missed free throws and battling for rebounds in an effort to create one last scoring chance. Moapa ultimately sealed the game at the line in the closing moments, securing the 49–44 win.
Although the result did not fall in Pahrump’s favor, the Lady Trojans demonstrated resilience, composure, and strong teamwork throughout the contest. Matching Moapa Valley possession for possession on the road reflects the continued growth and fighting spirit this Lady Trojans squad has shown throughout the season, with the group continuing to push for success as postseason play draws closer.
