As students across Nye County settle into the new school year, the Nye County School District (NCSD) is putting a spotlight on the critical importance of regular school attendance—and making it easier than ever for parents to report absences. The district has rolled out a new streamlined reporting process through EduRooms, a feature integrated directly into the official NCSD app.
The numbers show just how important consistent attendance is for student success. According to AttendanceWorks.org, missing just two days of school each month adds up to 20 days a year—equal to 30 hours of math and 60 hours of reading and writing. By graduation, that student will have missed more than a full year of learning. For those who miss four days a month, the impact is even greater, adding up to more than two years of lost school time.
“Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and build a strong foundation for their future,” said Dr. Joseph Gent, Superintendent of Nye County School District. “We are committed to partnering with our families to ensure every student has the chance to succeed, and that starts with being present in the classroom.”
To support that goal, the new EduRooms absence-reporting tool simplifies the process for parents and guardians. Instead of calling or sending notes, parents can now send a direct message to their child’s school attendance office—similar to sending a text message.
When reporting an absence, parents should include their child’s name, the date of the absence, and the reason. For medical appointments, a photograph of the doctor’s note can be attached. This quick process ensures schools receive accurate information in a timely manner.
Providing a reason is particularly important. If no explanation is given, an absence may be marked as truancy, which could result in a referral to law enforcement. To help monitor attendance, the district uses the code “DM” (Domestic Measure) to indicate that a reason was provided. While “DM” absences appear as unexcused in Infinite Campus, they are not considered truancies when reported by a guardian within three days. A few “DM” absences will not negatively affect a student’s record. However, the district cautions that missing more than 30% of the school year could raise concerns of educational neglect.
“We are committed to strengthening the connection between our schools and our families,” Superintendent Gent said. “This tool is another step toward enhancing that partnership and providing parents with the information they need to support their child’s success.”
Parents can access EduRooms by downloading the Nye County School District app from the iOS App Store or the Android Play Store.
