Nye County School District Encourages Strong Attendance as New School Year Begins

As the start of the 2026-2027 school year approaches, the Nye County School District is reminding families that one of the most important factors in student success is simply showing up.

In a back-to-school message, Superintendent Dr. Joseph Gent welcomed students and families across the district while emphasizing the importance of consistent attendance from the very first day of school. District staff, teachers and administrators, he said, have spent the summer preparing safe, engaging and supportive learning environments for students throughout Nye County.

Students attending schools on the district’s four-day schedule will return to class on Monday, Aug. 3, while Pahrump schools begin Wednesday, Aug. 5. Preschool students will start on Monday, Aug. 17.

“Our mission is to empower every student to learn at their highest level,” Gent said in the release. “To make that vision a reality, we need our students in class, engaged, and ready to grow every single day.”

District officials noted that missing just two days of school each month can have a significant impact on a student’s education. Over the course of a school year, that amounts to approximately 20 missed days, including an estimated 30 hours of math instruction and 60 hours of reading and writing. Across a student’s K-12 education, those absences can total nearly two full years of missed learning.

“Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to learn, grow, and build a strong foundation for their future,” Gent said. “We are committed to partnering with our families to ensure every student has the chance to succeed, and that starts with being present in the classroom.”

To help families communicate more efficiently with schools, the district is also expanding the use of Rooms, formerly known as EduRooms. Integrated into the official Nye County School District mobile app and website, the messaging platform allows parents and guardians to communicate directly with school attendance staff and teachers.

District officials are encouraging parents to report student absences as soon as possible. Under Nevada law and district policy, absences that are not verified by a parent or guardian within three school days must be recorded as truancy. Continued unresolved truancies can result in mandatory referrals to law enforcement and possible citations.

Parents can report an absence by opening the NCSD app, navigating to the Rooms messaging feature and sending a message to the school’s attendance clerk or secretary. The district asks families to include the student’s full name, the date or dates of the absence, and the reason. For medical appointments, parents should also attach a photo of the doctor’s note. Families with children attending multiple schools can send one message to attendance staff at up to three schools simultaneously.

The district also reminded families that additional attendance information, district policies, the Parent Digital Toolkit and support resources for Rooms are available through the Nye County School District website and mobile app.
