Nathan Trudeau, a 2017 graduate of Pahrump Valley High School, reflects on the pivotal role his high school years played in shaping the man he is today. From his time on the wrestling team to valuable lessons in perseverance and independence, his experiences in Pahrump laid the groundwork for a career as a compliance engineer for the Server Technology group with Legrand, a global leader in power distribution for data centers.

During his time at Pahrump Valley High, Nathan joined the wrestling team, an experience he describes as both rewarding and formative. Though he participated for only two years, he fondly recalls the camaraderie and mentorship of his teammates, particularly seniors Jaxon and Jace Clayton, who were standout athletes competing at the state level. “They were really nice to me and looked out for me,” Nathan shared. “That was always really cool.” Wrestling taught him not only the importance of teamwork but also how to rise to challenges—a skill that would become invaluable in his later endeavors.

Outside of sports, Nathan embraced the opportunities high school provided to develop a strong work ethic. He learned an important lesson: success depends less on the resources available and more on the attitude and effort a person brings. “You can really make your own opportunities and resources,” he said. “If you choose to be a good student and want to learn, you can be ahead of someone who didn’t want to be in school, even if they had more resources.” This mindset guided him through high school and beyond, influencing the decisions that shaped his future.

The transition from high school to college proved to be both exciting and challenging for Nathan. Moving from the familiar comforts of home to living independently at the University of Nevada, Reno, brought a host of new responsibilities. “The bigger problem I had was getting to college and learning a lot more personal responsibility,” he explained. “All of a sudden, you have this freedom, and it’s a lot to manage.” Juggling this newfound independence with the demands of rigorous coursework taught Nathan critical skills in time management and self-discipline, lessons that would serve him throughout his career.

Initially enrolling as a biology major, Nathan soon realized his true passion lay in engineering, a dream he had nurtured since childhood. “Ever since I was eight, I knew I wanted to be an engineer. I remember learning what an engineer was and saying, ‘I want to do that—I like cars.’” After switching to mechanical engineering, he focused on studying aerodynamics and even conducted research for a professor, gaining hands-on experience that built a solid foundation for his career. His work ethic and focus on problem-solving set him apart, laying the groundwork for his post-college opportunities.

Nathan began his professional journey at an automotive test center, where he combined his love for cars with his engineering expertise. However, while he enjoyed the technical challenges, he came to a significant realization: his passion wasn’t just about cars; it was about solving complex problems. This revelation led him to Legrand, where he now thrives as a compliance engineer, addressing challenges in power distribution systems for data centers. “What I found is that I love being a problem solver. That’s what drives me,” he said. Nathan’s role at Legrand allows him to work on innovative and impactful projects, such as optimizing data center power systems—a vital component of the digital age.

Nathan’s career ambitions continue to grow. Currently, he is working to expand his expertise in electrical engineering and plans to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in this field, a significant step toward becoming a licensed professional engineer. “It’s a goal I’m really excited about,” he shared. Achieving this milestone will further solidify his expertise and allow him to take on greater responsibilities in his field.

Living in Reno, Nathan enjoys a dynamic personal life that balances professional goals with outdoor adventures. He takes advantage of Reno’s unique location by skiing in the winter, riding motorcycles through scenic routes in the summer, and bird hunting in the fall. Gaming is another passion that offers year-round relaxation. Despite his busy life, Nathan stays connected to his roots, visiting his family in Pahrump whenever possible and reflecting on the values that shaped his success.

Nathan attributes much of his drive and discipline to his parents, who placed a strong emphasis on education and hard work. They implemented a system that tied incentives, such as allowances and support for a first car, to academic performance. “They prioritized learning a lot,” Nathan said. “Their encouragement and approach to discipline taught me the value of hard work and goal-setting.” These lessons instilled a sense of responsibility and a determination to achieve his goals, traits that have carried him through every stage of life.

Nathan’s advice to current high school students is to align their skills and interests with career paths that offer value and fulfillment. “Think about what you enjoy doing in a career sense,” he said. “Consider how your skills and interests align with something valuable to a company. Not everyone has to go to college—trade schools offer great opportunities—but if you do, think about how your passions translate into a meaningful degree.”

From his roots in Pahrump to solving cutting-edge engineering challenges, Nathan’s journey is an inspiring example for young professionals and students. His path underscores the importance of hard work, adaptability, and pursuing a life driven by passion and purpose.
