    Meet Assistant Superintendent Laura Weir

    Dedicated Champion of Educational Excellence

Laura Weir, who has been serving as the Assistant Superintendent for the past two years, has a rich and diverse background in education, driven by a passion for working with children and a love for continuous learning. Her love of children began when she got her first job as a teenager working at a children’s play place and a daycare center. There, she discovered her true calling as an educator.

After graduating from UNLV in 2000, Laura began her teaching career in the Clark County School District (CCSD) at the same school where she completed her student teaching. Two years later, she and her family moved to Pahrump, where she joined JG Johnson Elementary School. With a strong desire to make a broader impact, she pursued an educational leadership degree, leading to a unique opportunity at Mt. Charleston Elementary School, where she served as both teacher and assistant principal.

As Laura gained more experience, she took on roles as assistant principal at Rosemary Clarke Middle School (RCMS) from 2011 to 2016 and principal at Manse Elementary School from 2016 to 2021. In 2021, she transitioned to district-level leadership as the Director of Elementary Education and quickly progressed to her current role as Assistant Superintendent.

“My goal has always been to make a positive difference for students, teachers, and schools, driven by my dedication to educational excellence and growth,” Laura said.

From the moment she joined Nye County School District (NCSD), Laura recognized the district’s potential despite being smaller than others in the state. Her vision revolves around fostering a culture that prioritizes learning for everyone, aiming to elevate NCSD to a standout position statewide.

“To achieve this goal, I believe in promoting collaboration between district leadership and our school communities, and finding the right balance of challenge and encouragement for everyone,” Laura explained. She plans to support district leadership in maintaining focus on the strategic plan, upholding consistent expectations, and ensuring clear and effective communication.

Laura’s typical day as Assistant Superintendent is varied and dynamic. “Each day brings its own set of unique challenges and rewards,” she noted. Most days begin with reviewing and responding to emails, but after that, her tasks can include visiting schools, supporting school principals, attending meetings, coordinating professional learning, and collaborating with colleagues from various departments.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of her role is the connections she forges with others. “I consider myself fortunate to provide support and encouragement to school principals and colleagues, alongside an incredibly committed district leadership team,” Laura shared. However, navigating resistance to change and solving problems with those who may not immediately see the reasoning behind certain decisions are among the toughest parts of her job.

Laura is committed to engaging with students, parents, and the broader community to ensure everyone is involved in the educational process. She regularly visits schools, interacts with students and parents during drop-off and pick-up times, participates in classroom activities, and attends both school and community events.

“This year, a key objective is to facilitate district leadership roundtables in each school and/or community within our district,” Laura mentioned. These meetings aim to foster positive communication and support for the work being done within each school to support student success.

Outside of her professional life, Laura values spending quality time with her family. Laura has been married to her husband Lawrence for 22 years and they share four children and three grand children. Whether they are caring for their pets, enjoying sports events, camping, fishing, or simply grilling dinner together in the backyard, these moments are the highlights of her day.

“I feel it’s important to be well-rounded and balanced,” Laura said. She enjoys home-improvement projects, cooking as a stress-reliever, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which allows her to give her all at work and then recharge with cherished family experiences.

    Commitment to the Community

Laura has lived in Pahrump for over 22 years, raised her children here, and has grandchildren attending local schools. She is deeply invested in the district and committed to fostering a culture of learning for all. Her dedication to educational excellence and growth is evident in her efforts to support students, teachers, and the broader community.

With her extensive experience, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment, Laura Weir is a transformative leader in education, working tirelessly to ensure the continuous improvement and success of NCSD.
