Mama’s Musings: If You Give a Mom a Garden Bed

If you give a mom a garden bed, she’s going to want a second one.

Once she has two garden beds, she’s going to look at the gap in the middle and want a trellis.

Once she sees how fun it is to grow things vertically, she’s going to want a bigger trellis for a flowering vine.

After she falls in love with a wall of living green, she’ll dream up a full wall of different grape varieties.

Thinking of how many grapes her kids eat in a typical summer will lead to her thinking of how much they love berries. Thus, she’ll ask for a blueberry hedge and strawberry steps.

After the strawberries and blueberries are planted, she’ll realize the melon vines she bought have taken over the original garden beds and plan out low melon beds.

While admiring the melon beds, she’ll think of all the other fruits her family loves and map out a mini orchard.

As she’s appreciating the mini orchard in its first spring, she’ll realize there’s room for a duck house and will get ducklings.

During the duck house construction, she’ll notice the tiny fruit buds and start thinking of honey bees.

Hopefully in a year or two, she’ll be seeing the effects of those bees…in her two original garden beds.

Disclaimer/Reality Check: Most of my projects go like this, and I am very fortunate to have the best husband I know to put up with it. I couldn’t do it without him! A year ago my garden journey began with the two beds & trellis. This column will be about motherhood, parenting, and homemaking for the most part. It might be low energy ways to connect with your kids or it might be the best ways to use up their extra energy before bedtime. Most importantly, I don’t ever want this column to make another mama think she’s not doing enough. If you’re reading this, I want you to know that you are, you’re doing great, keep it up. Sing it with me: no-one is doing it allllll!
