The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ wrestling team stepped onto one of the biggest stages of their season January 30-31, competing in the state qualifying tournament at Clark High School. Facing some of the toughest competition from across Southern Nevada, the Lady Trojans battled with determination, wrapping up their season while helping lay the foundation for the continued growth of the program.
Competing in the 125-pound weight class, Sarah Penner represented Pahrump Valley with resilience throughout the tournament. Penner opened her run in the championship bracket against Sierra Vista’s Esme Valenzuela. Despite a tough matchup, Penner remained aggressive and continued to fight until the match concluded early in the first round.

Moving into the consolation bracket, Penner received a bye in her first opportunity before returning to the mat with renewed focus. She delivered a strong performance in Consolation Round 2, securing a victory over Coronado’s Joslyn Bock with a pin at the 2:01 mark. The win showcased Penner’s ability to regroup after adversity and demonstrated her growth throughout the season.

Penner advanced to Consolation Round 3, where she faced Cheyenne’s Thifany Ortega. The match was competitive, with Penner continuing to push the pace before Ortega secured the win. Although Penner did not place in the tournament, her performance reflected the grit and development that has defined her season, as well as her willingness to battle through the demanding state qualifier bracket.
Also competing for the Lady Trojans was Patience Moore, who brought effort and determination to the mat in her state qualifying debut. Moore faced Lincoln County’s Dani Petersen in the opening championship round. While the match ended early, Moore quickly shifted her focus toward the consolation side of the bracket.

After receiving a bye in Consolation Round 1, Moore returned to competition against Las Vegas High School’s Armahni White. Moore continued to wrestle with effort and intensity, gaining valuable experience against high-level competition. Though she was unable to advance further in the bracket, Moore’s participation in the state qualifier marked an important step in her development as a wrestler.

While neither Lady Trojan advanced to the state tournament, both Penner and Moore represented Pahrump Valley with heart and perseverance against a deep and talented field. Competing at the qualifying level provides critical experience, especially for a program that continues to grow and strengthen each season.
As the Lady Trojans close out their season, the lessons learned and skills developed throughout the season will help lay the foundation for future success.
