Daniel Clasen, a 2015 graduate of Pahrump Valley High School (PVHS), has traveled a remarkable path from student-athlete to an influential math teacher and soccer coach. Now residing in Anthem, Arizona, Daniel is making a difference at Boulder Creek High School, where he combines his passion for education with his love for athletics. His journey reflects the power of community, perseverance, and a commitment to personal growth.
During his time at PVHS, Daniel was deeply immersed in athletics, where he built lifelong memories with friends both on and off the field. Sports were more than just a pastime—they defined his high school experience. “Playing a sport I loved gave me the opportunity to create lasting memories with my friends,” he recalls. Those experiences instilled valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and camaraderie, which have stayed with him throughout his professional life.
Daniel also remembers his math teachers—Mrs. Daffer, Mrs. Owens, Mr. Paxton, and Mr. Dabrowski—as significant influences. Their dedication and teaching styles left a lasting impression on him. “Many of the skills I use daily I learned from them. I’m so grateful for their teaching and for the opportunity to later teach alongside them,” he shares. These educators not only shaped his love for math but also inspired his approach to mentoring students in his own classroom.
Daniel’s career journey was not without its hurdles. While high school came easily to him due to its structured routine, the transition to college brought unexpected challenges. Struggling to stay focused and uncertain about his career direction, Daniel faced a rough start. He credits his wife, Ciara, for providing the support and motivation he needed to persevere, helping him see the light at the end of the tunnel and ultimately achieve his goals.
Initially, Daniel aspired to become a physical therapist, but his career took an unexpected turn when a brief internship revealed it wasn’t the right fit. Feeling uncertain about his future, he began substituting at Community Christian Academy in Pahrump to earn extra income. What started as a temporary job quickly turned into a passion. “After my first day of subbing, I was hooked and never turned back,” Daniel explains. He soon became a physical education teacher and later transitioned to teaching fifth grade, finding fulfillment in helping students grow.
His return to PVHS marked an important chapter in his career. Teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 and coaching the JV girls’ soccer team allowed Daniel to give back to the school that shaped him. One of his proudest professional moments came in 2021 when he helped coach the PVHS girls’ soccer team to a state championship. “Getting to coach with Julie Carrington and Holly Mendoza and help coach all of the girls who were a part of that team will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s something I’m very proud to tell people I was a part of,” he says.
Although leaving PVHS was a difficult decision, Daniel moved to Arizona to be closer to his now-wife, Ciara, who is completing her nursing degree. He began teaching eighth-grade math at a K-8 school while also coaching the JV girls’ soccer team at Boulder Creek High School. His role as a coach allowed him to connect with the high school community, eventually leading to a full-time teaching position at Boulder Creek. Reflecting on his journey, Daniel emphasizes the importance of adaptability and understanding in education. “I’ve learned that everybody learns differently. Teaching has forced me to adapt my own learning style to help kids who learn in ways other than I do.”
Now, Daniel encourages others to embrace community involvement and maintain a fresh perspective each day. “If someone wanted to follow the same path as me, I would encourage them to get involved in their school and the community around them. Being involved can really help make life at work better,” he says. He also emphasizes the importance of approaching each day with a clean slate for students. “Sometimes one day can be really tough, and the next can be the best day ever. Coming in each day with a fresh perspective for each kid can make life easier and help students always feel welcome.”
Daniel acknowledges his parents, Dave and Rosalee Clasen, as the most influential figures in shaping his career and personal development. Their unwavering support and dedication left a profound impact, from countless hours spent at the soccer fields to their years of service in the church. Through their actions, they demonstrated how to care for and serve others while remaining deeply devoted to their family. “They raised me to love the Lord and serve others,” Daniel reflects, a principle he strives to uphold daily in every aspect of his life.
Outside of his professional life, Daniel enjoys an active and fulfilling personal life. He finds joy in hiking, exercising, and staying involved in his church community. A passionate sports fan, he relishes cheering on the Phoenix Suns, a bonus of living in Phoenix, and treasures spending time with his wife, Ciara and their two-year-old cat, Junebug. Balancing his professional and personal life is a priority, especially during the busy soccer season when his wife is a constant source of encouragement, cheering on his team from the sidelines. In the off-season, Daniel ensures they have quality time together, creating a strong foundation for their relationship.
Looking ahead, Daniel has ambitious goals to further his education by earning a master’s degree, which he sees as an opportunity to improve his teaching practices and continue growing as an educator. On a more immediate horizon, he is excited about two significant milestones: his wife’s upcoming graduation as a nurse in April, marking the fulfillment of her lifelong dream, and his team’s promising soccer season, where they aim for a competitive and successful run. These moments highlight his dedication to both his personal and professional aspirations, rooted in the values his parents instilled in him.
Daniel’s story is one of the profound impact of community and mentorship. From his roots in Pahrump to his current role in Anthem, he continues to make a difference in the lives of his students and athletes, carrying forward the lessons he learned at PVHS and beyond. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, adaptability, and a commitment to helping others succeed.
