On Monday, September 30, the PVHS JV Boys’ Soccer team faced off against American Heritage Academy in a friendly match that provided both teams with an opportunity for growth and development. Although PVHS fell 3-0, the game was a productive learning experience, as Head Coach Devin Peterson emphasized the importance of focusing on player development rather than the final score.

Despite the loss, the Trojans showed determination on the field. Rafael Sanchez took five shots on goal, while Jessie Barajas-Roman added three more. Jessie also played 75 percent of the game as the starting goalkeeper, saving eight shots and conceding only one goal before switching to striker. Gabriel France stepped in as goalkeeper for the final quarter of the match, saving four shots and conceding two goals under immediate pressure from the opposition.

“This was a great opportunity for our developing players to gain experience,” Coach Peterson said. “We held our own for the majority of the game, even though American Heritage had several skilled seniors who usually play at the varsity level. I’m proud of how our team stepped up, especially with many of our younger players getting extended playing time.”

Samuel Sylva, named player of the game, was a standout on the field, particularly in the second half. Sylva went toe-to-toe with more experienced varsity-level players, showing tenacity and hustle. “Samuel played nearly the entire second half and showed incredible fight, even winning the ball over a 7-foot senior,” Peterson added. “He’s gaining valuable experience that will serve him well in the future.”

In addition to Sylva, other players like Miguel Frias, Azael Machuca-Castillo, Jessie Barajas-Roman, and several others were able to step into larger roles as attackers, showing promise as they began developing synergy on the field after the team’s entire front four were promoted to varsity. Defenders James Wilson, Arthur Youngblood, Samson Wagner, Bryce Whitney, and Tommy Harris-Maconaghie anchored the backline, while secondary players Elijah Trevino, Isaac Dominguez, Samuel Sylva, and Diego Estrada Gonzalez made strong contributions, gaining significant minutes during the match.

“One of the benefits of JV soccer is that we are development-driven, not ego-driven,” Coach Peterson explained. “Our wins and losses are determined by our successes and failures during the game, not by the scoreboard. I couldn’t be more proud of these players; their successes speak volumes every time they hit the field.”

Though the final score may not have reflected it, the PVHS JV Boys’ Soccer team walked away from the friendly match with valuable lessons learned, renewed confidence, and key experience that will aid them in future competitions.
