Java Junkies: A Decade of Community, Coffee, and Perseverance

Java Junkies, a beloved local coffee shop in Pahrump, is celebrating a significant milestone this September – its 10th anniversary. Founded by Kris Su, the story behind Java Junkies is one of transformation, perseverance, and community support.

Kris recalls the moment that sparked the idea for his coffee shop. “Years ago, I was being transported to federal prison, and I saw a little hut by Carl’s Junior where Starbucks is now. I told myself that if I ever got out, I would come back to this town, rent that building, and start a coffee shop,” he shared. After serving his time, Kris moved to Pahrump with his mother and grandmother, who believed in his vision and supported him financially. With just $60 to his name, Kris’s grandmother pulled $4,000 from her funeral fund and told him to make it work.

Starting a business is never easy, and Java Junkies faced numerous challenges in its early years. Kris and his family struggled to stay afloat, often worried about making enough to pay rent and buy groceries. “There were days when we talked about how making $50 or $75 a day would be enough to keep us going,” Kris said. Despite these hardships, they persevered.

Kris’s dedication to the community played a significant role in building Java Junkies’ reputation. “Wherever I could give back, I always did,” he explained. He hosted fundraisers for people who were sick, supported local schools, and partnered with numerous organizations such as No to Abuse and Nevada Outreach. His commitment to the community became a cornerstone of his business.

However, the journey was not without setbacks. When his original location was sold to Starbucks, Kris faced the possibility of closing down. But the community rallied behind him, raising thousands of dollars through car washes and blind auctions to help him relocate. “This town saved me and made it possible for me to continue running this business and taking care of my family,” Kris expressed with gratitude.

Java Junkies relocated to its current location at 840 Highway 372, between Valley Electric and Tractor Supply, turning two small closets into a thriving drive-through coffee shop. The shop is open seven days a week, from 6 AM to 6 PM, except on Sundays when it opens at 7 AM.

Kris’s unique approach to customer service sets Java Junkies apart. He emphasizes genuine connections with customers, training his staff to remember regulars’ orders and preferences. “We genuinely know who people are,” Kris said. This personal touch has helped Java Junkies maintain a loyal customer base and become a favorite spot in Pahrump.

The menu at Java Junkies is diverse and creative, with many items inspired by Kris and his staff. Popular drinks include the Funky Monkey, a chocolate banana drink, and the Caramel Crème Brûlée. Kris also ensures that there are options for everyone, including a wide variety of sugar-free flavors and milk alternatives like almond, soy, and oat milk.

In addition to running the coffee shop, Kris is involved in various community activities. He has been a guest speaker for the juvenile courts’ truancy program and the Jag program at the high school, sharing his story to inspire young people. He also participates in Real Talk, a program in Las Vegas that supports at-risk youth.

Looking back at the past decade, Kris is most proud of the person he has become and the positive impact Java Junkies has had on the community. “I went from a federal felon to a beloved person in this town,” he reflected. His journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of community support.

Kris has plans to expand Java Junkies in the future, including growing his consumer coffee line, Iron Junkies Coffee Company. For now, he continues to focus on providing excellent service and creating a welcoming atmosphere for his customers.

Java Junkies is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a symbol of hope, perseverance, and community spirit. As Kris says, “When you support Java Junkies, you’re contributing to our local economy and helping us give back to the community.”
