Joann Cunningham, head coach of the Pahrump Valley High School varsity dance team, brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. With 13 years in the dance world through her daughters and five years as a high school cheer coach in California, Cunningham is well-versed in working with high school students. “I have a lot of experience with kids,” she says, emphasizing her commitment to the program. When she heard no one had applied for the coaching position, Cunningham put her name in the hat. “I didn’t want the program to die, so I decided to jump in,” she recalls. There did end up being another applicant, but Cunningham was ultimately the choice. “I was excited to get the job, as once I committed to the idea, I had a lot of ideas for the program.”

As she enters her second year as head coach, Cunningham is impressed with the progress her team has made. “They have been open to change and flexible,” she notes, highlighting the team’s adaptability and willingness to try new things. She credits their success to their self-motivation and determination. “They all rise to the occasion and are self-motivated young ladies who want to do well,” Cunningham says.

Last year, Cunningham introduced significant changes to the program, including new uniforms and sideline dances. Previously, the team performed only halftime routines, but now they dance throughout the entire event, whether it’s football or basketball. “I think it’s really fun,” Cunningham says. Despite some initial resistance, the changes have been well-received. “After having sit-down conversations and working with other coaches, we have established an extremely positive program,” she adds.

Reflecting on her first year, Cunningham learned that it’s impossible to please everyone. “Sometimes, as the coach, you have to make decisions that not everyone agrees with,” she acknowledges. Her focus remains on doing what’s best for the team and the program. This year’s routines will showcase a variety of skills and abilities, incorporating more hip-hop and funky jazz elements. “We are working with some really talented choreographers to build routines that will showcase their skills and abilities,” she explains.

The team has set several key goals for the season, including solidifying new standards and traditions. With a group of five seniors, Cunningham is excited to implement senior spotlights and other activities to highlight their contributions. “I’m really excited for the seniors because they bring so much to the team,” she says.

The dance team boasts a diverse and talented group of 12 dancers this season, each bringing unique skills and energy to the team. Freshman Adelia joins the team with a strong background in dance and impressive tumbling skills, making her a valuable addition. Another freshman, Emilee, also brings dance experience and flexibility, which will be beneficial to the team’s overall performance.

Isabella, the team’s only sophomore, is a returning dancer with a solid dance background and an energetic personality. Junior Lucy, the current Miss Pahrump, brings a wealth of experience from her three years on the team, along with fun and excitement. McKenna, a junior and the coach’s daughter, is known for her spunk, energy, and dedication to perfection. Natalie, also a junior, impresses with her technique and grace, adding smooth lines to the team’s routines. Lastly, junior Tayela brings solid dance skills and incredible leg activity in jumps, making her a dynamic performer.

Among the seniors, Analise stands out with her spunk and a radiant smile that lights up the field, while Charlotte’s consistency and solid dance skills provide a steady foundation for the team. Maddy offers continuity and reliability, often helping answer questions and supporting her teammates. Mayaeli, a new senior dancer, adds a fresh perspective with her hip-hop background and great energy. Tailey is known for her positive attitude and willingness to try new things, bringing a fun and energetic vibe to the group. With the exception of Mayaeli, the senior members are all 4-year members. Together, these dancers create a well-rounded and highly skilled team ready to entertain and inspire this season.

One of Cunningham’s primary concerns is maintaining team chemistry. “Team chemistry is huge,” she emphasizes. She fosters a supportive environment where issues are addressed openly and resolved quickly. “We work through it and then move forward,” she states. This approach helps build trust and keeps the team focused on their main objective: being amazing performers and bringing school spirit.

Balancing tradition with new elements is an ongoing challenge. Cunningham reaches out to previous coaches for guidance and incorporates feedback from the team and parents. “I take that information and create what I think will be good for the program and fun for the girls,” she explains. The goal is to keep the program fun while maintaining the core traditions that have been part of the team’s history.

Support from the school and community has been vital to the team’s success. Cunningham praises the administration for their openness to her vision and the community for their support. “I have amazing administrators who have been very supportive,” she says. “The community has also been responsive, offering facilities for fundraisers and providing financial support through scholarships.”

Looking ahead, Cunningham is excited to build on the foundation laid last year. “I’m excited to do it again, now knowing what I know,” she says. With a strong group of dancers and a supportive assistant coach, Candace Simpson, Cunningham is optimistic about the upcoming season. Simpson, a fellow dance mom with dance experience, brings a balanced perspective to the team. “She helps to balance us out as a team,” Cunningham notes.

As the team heads into the new season, Cunningham has a message for fans and supporters: “We are excited to be out there and to entertain you. We appreciate you and all your support.” With new routines, enthusiastic dancers, and a committed coach, the Pahrump Valley High School dance team is ready to shine.
