The Pahrump Valley High School JV boys’ basketball team hosted the The Meadows Mustangs on Wednesday, January 14, leaning into a fast pace and full-court pressure from the opening tip in a hard-fought home matchup.
The Mustangs struck first, but Pahrump Valley quickly answered when Anthony Montanez buried a three-pointer off a rebound to take an early 3–2 lead. The Trojans committed to pressing full court, though Meadows capitalized on turnovers and outside shooting to build momentum. A series of three-pointers helped the Mustangs stretch the lead to 10–3 midway through the first quarter. Kamden Moore stopped the run late with a three from the right side, but Meadows carried a 22–6 advantage into the end of the opening period.
Pahrump Valley continued to attack in the second quarter. Moore scored on an inbounds play, and Chasen Hamann finished on a cut to the basket as the Trojans worked to close the gap. Montanez added another three from the right side, trimming the deficit to 15–32. Despite strong execution on inbounds sets that led to additional baskets, Meadows responded consistently and took a 37–17 lead into halftime.
The Trojans came out of the break with renewed energy. Josh Gent scored twice from the right block to open the third quarter, cutting the score to 21–45. Gent later tipped a ball to Hamann for another basket, and Tanner Gott converted an open layup as Pahrump Valley continued to apply full-court man pressure. Moore contributed from the free-throw line and knocked down a corner jumper, while Montanez finished through contact and added points at the line. A late steal led to a half-court layup by Moore, helping the Trojans close the third quarter trailing 56–38.
In the fourth, Pahrump Valley kept competing on both ends. The Trojans scored inside early to make it 43–66, followed by a successful backdoor cut to cut further into the margin. Hunter Wydick was fouled on a made basket underneath, and Daniel Thompson recorded a key defensive block as the Trojans continued to battle. Bradly Griffin drained a three from the left corner, and Tanner Gott added another strong drive on an inbounds play. Thompson capped the night with a late three-pointer as the Trojans played through the final buzzer.
Despite the 79–55 final, Pahrump Valley’s JV squad showed consistent effort and balanced scoring while pressing and attacking for all four quarters, gaining valuable experience as the Trojans continue to develop through the season.
