In a game filled with home runs, momentum swings, and fierce determination, the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans softball team fell just short in an offensive showdown against the Needles Mustangs at home on Tuesday, March 18. Despite an explosive performance at the plate, the Trojans ultimately lost 25-21 in what turned out to be an unforgettable game.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, launching a home run to left-center to go up 4-0. Pahrump responded quickly in the bottom of the frame when Evalenne Armendariz stole home, and Riley Saldaña blasted a two-run homer to center, closing the gap to 4-3.

By the third inning, the Trojans had gained the upper hand. Armendariz smashed a home run to right field, followed immediately by another towering shot from Saldaña to left. A short hit from Autumn Colon brought in another run, and Pahrump took a 7-5 lead.

However, the back-and-forth battle was only beginning. Needles answered in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, followed by multiple base hits that put them ahead 9-7. The Trojans wasted no time regaining the lead, as Sunday Colon sent a home run over left-center, tying the game at 9-9. A costly error allowed two more Pahrump runners to score, putting them up 11-9.

The fireworks continued into the fifth inning, with Pahrump extending their lead to 15-10. Then, in dramatic fashion, Autumn Colon crushed a three-run homer to make it 18-10, giving the Trojans what seemed to be a comfortable advantage.

But the Mustangs refused to back down. They capitalized on defensive errors in the sixth inning, chipping away at the lead until they pulled within two at 18-16. A deep hit to left scored another run, and by the end of the inning, the Trojans clung to a narrow 19-17 lead.

Sunday Colon led off the bottom of the sixth with her second home run of the night, extending the advantage to 19-17. But Needles delivered a crushing final blow in the seventh. A series of hits, an untimely error, and a triple to deep right allowed the Mustangs to explode for eight runs, flipping the game in their favor at 25-19.

Down to their final outs, the Trojans showed heart until the very end. Mariah Gray reached base, and with two outs, Danika Cox-Hosino launched a two-run homer to give Pahrump a fighting chance. But their rally fell short, and the Mustangs secured the 25-21 victory.

Despite the loss, the Trojans showcased their power with multiple home runs and aggressive baserunning. Standout performances included Evalenne Armendariz, Sunday Colon, Autumn Colon, Riley Saldaña, Madison Rodriguez, Mariah Gray, and Danika Cox-Hosino, all of whom contributed major offensive firepower.

The Trojans will look to regroup and fine-tune their defense as they prepare for their next matchup. If this game was any indication, Pahrump’s bats are ready to make some serious noise this season.
