The Pahrump Valley High School Trojans baseball team secured a commanding 8-2 win over the Canyon Springs Pioneers on March 5, demonstrating resilience and strong teamwork on the field.

The game started off slow, with both teams struggling to find early momentum. The Trojans went three up, three down in the first inning, but their defense held firm, preventing the Pioneers from capitalizing on an early scoring opportunity.

The second inning saw the Trojans break through, as Andrew Zurn reached first with a single and advanced to scoring position thanks to a stolen base and a wild pitch. A crucial base hit from Cody Fried brought Zurn home for the first run of the game. Despite loading the bases, the Trojans couldn’t extend their lead just yet, leaving the inning with a slim 1-0 advantage.

Defensive excellence from Zurn kept the Pioneers in check, retiring three batters quickly in the bottom of the second. In the third, the Trojans tacked on another run thanks to aggressive base running from Kayne Horibe, who managed to steal home after getting caught in a rundown. A solid defensive stand in the bottom half of the inning kept the Pioneers scoreless, sending the Trojans into the fourth with a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans extended their lead in the fourth inning, with Fried taking advantage of an error to reach base and later scoring on a wild pitch. The Pioneers responded with their first run of the game in the bottom of the inning, executing a sacrifice bunt to get on the board. However, the Trojans shut down their momentum with a strikeout that stranded three runners on base.

The fifth inning was a battle, as the Trojans struggled against a new Pioneers pitcher, leaving two runners stranded. The Pioneers made their push with a leadoff triple, quickly converting it into a run to cut the Trojans’ lead to 3-2. However, sharp fielding prevented further damage, with catcher Ben Cimperman making a clutch tag at home plate to stop another score.

Determined to put the game away, the Trojans exploded in the sixth inning. After a walk put Anthony Montanez on base, Ben Cimperman followed with a single to center, setting the stage for an offensive surge. A ground out from Tony Whitney allowed Montanez to score, followed by an RBI single from Aidyn Cratty. Smart base running and defensive errors from the Pioneers allowed Cratty and Horibe to score as well, pushing the lead to 7-2.

With the momentum firmly on their side, the Trojans continued their dominance in the seventh. Chris Nelson led off with a strong double to center, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Whitney to give the Trojans their final run of the game. The defense held strong in the bottom of the seventh, securing a quick three outs to seal the victory.

With this 8-2 win, the Trojans showcased a balanced attack of solid pitching, aggressive base running, and clutch hitting. Their ability to capitalize on errors and make smart plays on both sides of the ball proved the difference in a well-earned victory.
