Today, as the executive assistant to the CEO at Sunshine Community Health Center, a nonprofit, federally qualified health center in Talkeetna, Alaska, Ronni’s story is a testament to the power of adaptability.
After graduating from PVHS, Ronni stayed in Pahrump while taking classes at Great Basin College part-time and working two jobs. But life had bigger plans for her. During an annual visit to her father’s home in Alaska, she was offered a career opportunity that aligned perfectly with her long-term goals. Without hesitation, she made the leap, transferring her college credits to the University of Alaska Southeast while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience in healthcare administration.
Looking back on her time at Pahrump Valley High School, Ronni has many fond memories, but one of the most cherished was a basketball tournament trip to California. What should have been a simple competition turned into an unforgettable adventure when unexpected snowfall transformed the trip into a magical experience. The six-to-seven-hour bus ride felt less like a long journey and more like an extended road trip with her closest friends, creating bonds that would last far beyond high school.
Ronni was an active and engaged student at PVHS, excelling in both academics and extracurricular activities. She participated in various art competitions, earning awards in the “Break the Chains” competition, the Congressional Competition in Las Vegas, and the Intermountain Healthcare competition. These achievements not only highlighted her artistic talent but also allowed her to earn extra income. Academically, she maintained B Honor Roll status while juggling early morning basketball practices, work and traveling with her team.
Outside of the classroom, Ronni made the most of her high school experience. She spent time at the local gym, Fitness for $10, worked on projects in the auto and wood shops—creating a table she was particularly proud of—and immersed herself in school spirit events like dances, pep rallies, and senior sunrise. Through all of these activities, she learned the importance of fitness, teamwork, and social connections, skills that would serve her well in adulthood.
Despite her move to Alaska, Ronni remains connected to her PVHS community. She regularly keeps in touch with classmates and former teachers, making it a point to visit friends whenever she returns to Pahrump. Social media plays a significant role in maintaining these relationships, allowing her to stay up to date on the lives of her peers, especially her former coworkers, whom she still considers her work family.
Ronni credits many of the skills she uses daily in her professional life to lessons learned in high school. Writing skills have been crucial in drafting emails, contracts, and reports, while technical proficiency in Microsoft programs is something she relies on regularly. Even the simple habit of organizing her emails—something she first learned to do with her school account—has translated into an essential organizational tool in her career.
Ronni’s career journey has been one of trial and error, self-discovery, and persistence. After high school, she wasn’t entirely sure what path she wanted to take but was determined to build a secure future. She explored different interests, from art to auto shop, and worked various jobs before finding her calling in healthcare administration. In 2021, she stepped into the field as a receptionist, quickly realizing her natural ability to assist and support others. Over time, she transitioned into an administrative role, cementing her place in the industry.
Her decision to pursue healthcare was largely influenced by her upbringing—watching her mother work as a personal care assistant planted the seed of interest early on. However, she also allowed herself the flexibility to explore different career avenues. This openness to change and growth has been instrumental in shaping her professional success.
Ronni’s career has been marked by impressive accomplishments. She was promoted to executive assistant to the CEO at Sunshine Community Health Center, a role that has allowed her to advocate for rural health initiatives on a larger scale. She was accepted into the Business Administration program at the University of Alaska Southeast, further solidifying her expertise in healthcare management. Additionally, she traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for rural health policies—a milestone that deepened her commitment to the field.
Beyond her professional role, Ronni has been elected secretary for both the Northern Valley Health Coalition and the Upper Susitna Community Center board of directors. She also played a key role in her organization’s successful HRSA site visit, ensuring compliance with critical healthcare regulations. Attending her first professional conference was another pivotal moment, opening doors to new opportunities and professional growth.
Ronni’s journey has not been without its obstacles. Moving to a new state, adjusting to an independent life, and pursuing higher education while working full-time were all challenges she had to navigate. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters, creating uncertainty and isolation. However, she approached each challenge with focus, keeping her goals in sight and staying true to herself.

Whether through community college courses, savings, or entry-level work experience, every small step contributes to long-term success. Outside of work, Ronni’s life is filled with adventure and community service. At home, she enjoys the beauty of Alaska through outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, camping, and fishing. She even dipnets on Kasilof Beach, stocking up on salmon for the winter. Having purchased her first home in 2023, she has also taken on personal projects, including gardening home improvement, lawn and landscaping maintenance and improvements.
Ronni’s aspirations don’t stop here. She aims to become the CEO of a nonprofit organization serving a rural community, continuing her mission to improve health outcomes and quality of life in rural areas.
She also dreams of giving back to those that supported her along the way, creating her ideal living space in a fully paid-off home, and eventually earning a Master’s in Business Administration. Retirement by age 60, coupled with global travel, is also on her long-term vision board.
In the immediate future, she is excited about upcoming professional projects, including attending the National Rural Health Association annual conference in Georgia and the Policies and Issues Forum in Washington, D.C. She is also heavily involved in securing nonprofit status for the Northern Valley Health Coalition, a move that will enhance funding and resources for rural communities. Additionally, she will be participating in monthly radio interviews to keep the community informed about healthcare updates, events, and expansion efforts.
Ronni’s journey from Pahrump to Alaska is a powerful reminder that success is not always a straight path—it’s about adaptability, determination, and passion. Through her work in healthcare, her commitment to her community, and her adventurous spirit, she continues to make a meaningful impact.
