Pahrump residents can learn more about forever chemicals, microplastics and their potential effects on groundwater during the Private Well Owners Association’s next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Pahrump Valley Museum, 401 E. Basin Ave.

Guest speaker Kayla Armbruster, a geologist and environmental scientist with BEC Environmental, will discuss PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” and how substances found in everyday products can make their way into groundwater. Her presentation will include a map showing locations in Pahrump where PFAS contaminants have been detected, giving attendees a local perspective on the topic.

Armbruster will also address microplastics, concerns about their presence in water supplies and the importance of regular well testing. A question-and-answer session following the presentation will give residents an opportunity to ask about the information shared.

For a community where many households rely on private wells, the meeting offers an opportunity to better understand potential contaminants and the role testing plays in learning about water quality.

BEC Environmental is an environmental consulting firm with offices in Las Vegas, Reno and Phoenix. According to the meeting announcement, the company works with Nye County on environmental assessments for projects in the Pahrump Valley, including the Pahrump Fairgrounds Development Area. Grant funding supported the development and delivery of the upcoming presentation for the association.

The Private Well Owners Association is an educational nonprofit that helps residents learn about managing private wells, conserving water in Basin 162 and sustaining the area’s rural lifestyle. Its regular meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month and are free and open to the public.

Residents do not need to be members to attend the Nov. 4 presentation, and membership forms will be available for those interested in joining. For updates and additional information, visit privatewellowners.com or the association’s Facebook page.
