In an electrifying showdown at home on Wednesday, March 26, the Pahrump Valley High School Trojans softball team delivered a dramatic 10-9 walk-off win against the Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) Bulls. Powered by clutch hitting, gritty pitching, and unrelenting determination, the Trojans overcame early defensive struggles to secure a memorable victory that left fans on their feet.
Kayla Glenn started in the circle for Pahrump, facing immediate pressure. SLAM managed an early lead after an overthrown ball to first and a line drive to right that scored a runner. But right fielder Ryleigh Denton made a heads-up throw to the cutoff who hit third baseman Evalenne Armendariz to tag out the advancing runner, halting the damage at 0-1.

In their first at-bat, the Trojans wasted no time answering. Autumn Colon got things rolling with a double to left field and showed smart baserunning by stealing third on a dropped pitch. Danika Cox-Hosino brought her home with a deep sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at 1-1.

Though SLAM reclaimed and extended the lead in the second and third innings—taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues to jump ahead 4-1—the Trojans refused to fold. Kayla Glenn and Riley Saldaña each contributed key hits, but early on, runners were left stranded in scoring position.

The breakthrough came in the bottom of the fifth when Colon ignited the rally with a well-placed bunt. Cox-Hosino followed with a single, and then Evalenne Armendariz crushed a game-tying three-run home run over the right field fence, bringing the dugout and crowd to life. The momentum continued as Kayla Glenn and Dakota Glenn delivered back-to-back singles, each driving in a run to flip the score in Pahrump’s favor, 6-4.

SLAM responded in the top of the sixth with a flurry of base hits and a few costly errors by the Trojans, retaking the lead 9-6. With runners on base and the pressure mounting, Head Coach Brian Hayes made a strategic change, moving Evalenne to the mound and shifting Kayla to first base while adjusting other positions defensively.

Despite the rocky inning, the Trojans stayed composed. In the bottom of the sixth, they once again showed heart. Danika Cox-Hosino reached on an error, Armendariz singled, and Saldaña drove in a run with a hard-hit ball to left. After a flyout, Ava Chiancone loaded the bases on a bobbled grounder. Kayla Glenn came up clutch with a single up the middle, scoring two and tying the game 9-9.

The seventh inning proved decisive. Armendariz, found her rhythm and retired SLAM in order—two strikeouts and a lineout to left field caught by Cox-Hosino. That set the stage for the dramatic finish.
Colon led off with a double to left, her third hit of the game. Though Cox-Hosino flew out to center, Evalenne followed with a high fly ball to center field that was dropped. Colon attempted to score but was thrown out at the plate, leaving Evalenne at second with two outs.

Then came Saldaña—calm, focused, and ready. She sent a blistering line drive to left field, and Evalenne raced home from second to score the winning run, securing a thrilling 10-9 victory for the Trojans.
Head Coach Brian Hayes was proud of the team’s offensive effort and resilience. “We hit the ball very well and battled—they didn’t give up,” he said. “We put ourselves in a hole defensively, but it was nice to see them fight back. A lot of our hits were lasers right at them. We told the girls to keep their heads up because eventually, they’ll fall.”
While praising the team’s persistence, Hayes noted the need for improvement on defense. “Our defense is still a little shaky. If we want to be a state-caliber team, we’ve got to clean that up. Right now, we’re kind of our own worst enemy.”
He acknowledged the youth of the team, made up mostly of sophomores, with just a few upperclassmen. “We’re really young, and we understand that, but at some point, they’ve got to realize they’re the person—regardless of age,” Hayes said.
On this night, the Trojans proved that heart and hustle can overcome any obstacle. With their backs against the wall, they showed poise, power, and teamwork to claw their way back and seal the win. From clutch hits to gutsy baserunning and key defensive plays when it mattered most, the team demonstrated exactly what it means to fight until the very last out. It was a thrilling victory that showcased their grit—and a reminder that this Trojans squad has what it takes to rise to any challenge.
