Trojans Battle Top-Ranked Desert Oasis in Tough Home Matchup

Facing one of the top teams in Southern Nevada, the Pahrump Valley High School baseball team showed determination and competed with confidence despite an 11-1 loss to the 5A Desert Oasis Diamondbacks on Saturday, March 14. Desert Oasis, currently ranked first in the 5A South, proved why they hold that position, but the Trojans opened the game with energy and execution on their home field.

Pahrump set the tone early with a sharp defensive showing in the top of the first inning. With Vinny Whitney on the mound, the Trojans retired the side in order. Jacob Selbach handled the first two outs in left field, tracking down both a line drive and a fly ball, while Tony Whitney secured the third out at shortstop to complete the clean inning.

The Trojans carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on an early opportunity. Tony Whitney reached base on an error and aggressively moved into scoring position by stealing second. After a pair of outs, Cody Fried delivered with a single to center field, bringing Whitney home to give Pahrump a 1-0 lead. The early advantage highlighted the team’s ability to take advantage of defensive miscues and execute at the plate.

Desert Oasis responded in the second inning, stringing together quality at-bats to take control of the game. The Diamondbacks found gaps in the defense and showed patience at the plate, turning walks and well-placed hits into four runs to move ahead 4-1.

Pahrump continued to compete in the bottom of the second, with Kayne Horibe reaching base and advancing to third, but the Trojans were unable to bring him home. Despite the missed opportunity, the inning demonstrated the team’s ability to generate baserunners against a strong opponent.

The Diamondbacks added to their lead in the third inning, but the Trojans continued to show defensive highlights. Behind the plate, Ben Cimperman delivered a standout moment, firing a throw to Anthony Montanez at second base to catch a runner stealing. In the outfield, Selbach made an all-out diving attempt on a deep ball to right, showcasing the team’s effort and determination throughout the game.

Tony Whitney continued to lead offensively for the Trojans, collecting another hit in the third inning, while the team worked to find gaps against a disciplined Desert Oasis defense.

As the game progressed, the Trojans utilized multiple pitchers, with Cody Fried, Jacob Selbach and Kayne Horibe each taking the mound. Horibe closed out the top of the fifth inning on a strong note, recording two strikeouts after a fly out to quickly retire the side.

Defensively, Pahrump showed moments of strong execution, including a heads-up play to catch a Diamondback runner attempting to steal home in the fourth inning. Despite the scoreline, the Trojans continued to battle and make plays across the field.

Cody Fried added another hit in the fourth inning, continuing his productive day at the plate, while the Trojans stayed aggressive on the bases and looked to create opportunities.

The game concluded in the fifth inning under the mercy rule, but the matchup provided valuable experience for Pahrump against one of the top-ranked teams in the region. Competing against a high-level opponent like Desert Oasis offers a clear benchmark and an opportunity for growth as the Trojans continue their season.

While the final score may not reflect it, Pahrump Valley showed determination, hustle and flashes of strong execution throughout the game. With continued development and adjustments, the Trojans will look to build on these moments as they move forward in their highly-competitive schedule.
