The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ flag football team took the field at home in Pahrump on Wednesday, January 7, hosting Clark High School in a game that showcased the Trojans’ resilience, effort, and determination from start to finish.
Jazymyn Herrera opened the game at quarterback for Pahrump Valley as the Lady Trojans worked to establish their offense early. Clark struck first with a punt return touchdown, but the Trojans continued to battle on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Ma’liyah Collins made her presence felt right away, pulling a quick flag after an interception to limit additional yardage.
Despite Clark extending its lead in the first quarter, Pahrump Valley found bright moments throughout the game. Savannah Thompson rotated in at quarterback, giving the Lady Trojans a different look under center and continuing to push the offense forward. Anjolina Mercado came up with a key flag pull for a loss, showing strong awareness and hustle on defense, while Collins added a big run that resulted in a first down and energized the Trojans’ sideline.

As the game progressed into the second quarter, the Lady Trojans continued to fight for every stop. Diona Nixon was active defensively, pulling multiple flags and helping force an important turnover on downs late in the half. Ember Castaneda Dabney added a highlight moment by leaping to block an extra-point attempt, a play that drew loud support from the home crowd.
In the second half, Pahrump Valley remained focused and continued to compete with heart. Nixon, Mercado, and Toyia Farmer were consistently around the ball, making stops and pulling flags to slow Clark’s offense. The Lady Trojans also showed persistence offensively, mixing quarterback runs with short completions and keeping drives alive when possible.

Late in the game, Collins delivered another strong run for a first down, while Thompson showcased determination with tough runs and a spin move to gain extra yardage. Nixon added several carries as the Lady Trojans continued to push until the final whistle.
Head Coach Jeff Corbett emphasized the team’s continued progress following the game, noting that improvement is happening on both sides of the ball. “Defense is getting better. There’s hustle, grit, and determination within the group,” Corbett said. “On offense we need to work on blocking and catching before we run. It’ll all come together in time. As long as we’re focused and striving to get better, we’ll be fine. We’re doing really well for our first year. We went to a run game that worked great in the last few minutes of the game which was refreshing. I think we had more first downs in the game than the rest. It’s improvements, even if they’re baby steps.”
While the final score did not reflect the Lady Trojans’ effort, the game was filled with examples of growth, teamwork, and relentless effort. Pahrump Valley’s girls’ flag football team continues to lay the foundation for the future, showing steady progress and promise as they gain experience and confidence in the program’s inaugural season.
