The Pahrump Valley High School girls’ varsity basketball team returned to the court at the Gator Winter Classic on Monday, December 29, facing Arbor View in a hard-fought contest that came down to the final moments. The matchup offered another high-intensity test for the Lady Trojans, who continued to show composure, effort, and growth while navigating the pressures of tournament play.

The Lady Trojans got off to a strong start, winning the opening tip and striking first when Riley Saldaña battled for position under the rim to score. Saldaña continued to set the tone early, attacking the basket and converting multiple finishes in the paint. A well-executed sideline play saw Aurora Bowers deliver an over-the-top pass to Saldaña on the block for another basket, giving the Lady Trojans early momentum.

Arbor View applied consistent full-court pressure, forcing turnovers, but Pahrump Valley responded with poise and hustle. Autumn Colon came up with a key steal and found Saldaña underneath for a basket, while Addi Nelsen and Ella Odegard contributed defensively with forced jump balls and rebounds. Despite the pressure, the Lady Trojans closed the first quarter strong, taking a narrow lead into the second.

The second quarter highlighted the Lady Trojans’ ability to break the press. Odegard converted both free throws on a layup attempt, and Saldaña continued to attack in transition, scoring on multiple press breaks and finishing through contact. Nelsen added a steal and aggressive push up the floor, while Saldaña capped the half with an and-one opportunity after securing her own rebound. The Lady Trojans headed into halftime holding a 29–17 advantage.

In the third quarter, Arbor View continued to press, but Pahrump Valley stayed composed. Odegard drew fouls while breaking pressure, Saldaña added another basket off an inbound play, and the defense forced a shot-clock violation. Colon and Sydney Crotty contributed with rebounds and defensive fouls that disrupted Arbor View’s rhythm, while Saldaña recorded a block and several contested rebounds to help maintain the lead.

The fourth quarter turned into a tightly contested battle. Arbor View chipped away at the deficit with timely baskets, while Pahrump Valley continued to generate looks through half-court sets and press breaks. Despite turnovers late, the Lady Trojans never stopped competing. With six seconds remaining, Saldaña knocked down a clutch jumper near the left elbow to cut the deficit to two, giving Pahrump Valley one final chance. After a timeout and a last defensive stand, the game ended with Arbor View narrowly escaping with a 42–40 win.

Although the final score did not fall in Pahrump Valley’s favor, the game against Arbor View served as another important step in a rebuilding season focused on growth and development. Competing in a tight, high-pressure matchup gave the Lady Trojans valuable experience they can continue to build on, with one game still remaining in the tournament and more than a month and a half of season play ahead.
