In a heartfelt ceremony, Nevada State Assemblyman Gregory Hafen II presented a proclamation to former Nye County Detective Bryan Cooper, recognizing his exceptional bravery, dedication, and service to the community. This honor comes as a testament to Cooper’s remarkable career and his extraordinary resilience in the face of danger.

Assemblyman Hafen expressed his gratitude to Cooper, saying, “Thank you for all you’ve done for our community. We wouldn’t be the same if you weren’t here today. We are very happy and thankful you are.” The proclamation, also supported by Senator Goicoechea, serves as a small token of appreciation for Cooper’s immense contributions to public safety.

Detective Bryan Cooper’s career with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) has been marked by his unwavering commitment and bravery. A defining moment in his service occurred on March 25, 2020, when Cooper and his partner, former NCSO Detective Logan Gibbs, were investigating a stabbing and robbery involving a known violent offender. During the investigation, Cooper was shot four times at close range with a shotgun by the suspect, twice in the vest, once in the left thigh and once in the right hip. This violent encounter, captured on both body camera and surveillance footage, underscored the perilous nature of law enforcement work.

The protective vest Cooper was wearing played a crucial role in saving his life during the attack, highlighting the critical importance of such safety equipment for officers. Cooper’s recovery journey was remarkable. After being discharged from the hospital on April 15, 2020, he was welcomed home with a hero’s reception from his colleagues and the extended southern Nevada community. This outpouring of support emphasized the solidarity and appreciation for law enforcement officers.

John Koenig (incoming county commissioner January 1, 2025), Sheriff Joe McGill, Detective Bryan Cooper, Assemblyman Gregory Hafen II, Commissioner Ron Boskovich, Commissioner Frank Carbone, Lieutenant Thomas Klenczar

“It was an honor to have Assemblyman Hafen II present this proclamation to Bryan,” Sheriff Joe McGill said. “Bryan and his family experienced a life-changing injury as a result of his serving as a Nye County Deputy.  It was a pleasure working with Bryan and it is an honor to call him a friend.  It was only by the grace of God that he didn’t lose his life on that evening.”

Cooper’s story gained national attention when it was featured on the Live PD television program, bringing well-deserved recognition to his commitment and the efforts of those involved in his recovery. His experience vividly illustrates the daily dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the incredible bravery required to confront such threats.

The proclamation presented to Cooper reads, in part:

“WHEREAS, Courage is defined by the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, difficulty or fear; and the actions and experiences of former Nye County Detective Bryan Cooper certainly embody this courageous label; and

WHEREAS, Detective Bryan Cooper has demonstrated exceptional bravery and dedication in his service to the community since he joined the Nye County Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, The life of Detective Cooper was preserved by the protective vest he was wearing during this violent encounter, which highlighted the critical importance of such safety equipment for law enforcement officers while actively protecting their community; and

WHEREAS, His remarkable recovery and the overwhelming public support he received were featured nationally on the Live PD television program and brought well-earned attention to his commitment to service and proper acknowledgment to all the outstanding individuals involved in his recovery.”

The proclamation concludes with a reaffirmation of Nevada’s commitment to honoring and commending Detective Cooper for his extraordinary courage, dedication, and resilience. It also underscores the recognition of the sacrifices made by all law enforcement officers to ensure public safety.

“It was very thoughtful,” Cooper said. “It’s nice to see even over 4 years later the community still has thoughts and prayers for me. The adjustments to my new way of living haven’t been easy physically and mentally. I am appreciative of all the love and support from this town!”

As the community of Pahrump reflects on Cooper’s service, his legacy stands as a powerful reminder of the courage and dedication required of those who serve in law enforcement. Assemblyman Hafen’s presentation of the proclamation is a fitting tribute to a true hero.
